WIKI:

Contemporary use by musicians and fans[edit]

The 1969 back album cover for Witchcraft Destroys Minds & Reaps Souls on Mercury Records by Chicago-based psychedelic-occult rock band Coven, led by singer Jinx Dawson, pictured Coven band members giving the "sign of the horns" correctly[citation needed] and included a Black Mass poster showing members at a ritual making the sign. Starting in early 1968, Coven concerts always began and ended with Dawson giving the sign on stage. This began the common use in heavy metal music.

He got the message

http://variety.com/2017/music/news/gene-simmons-abandons-attempt-to-trademark-devil-horns-1202476097/

Gene Simmons has withdrawn his application to trademark the hand gesture commonly known as the “devil horns” or “metal horns,” less than two weeks after he filed it with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, according to Forbes.

While Simmons’ attorney had not responded to Variety’s request for comment and confirmation at press time, multiple legal experts considered his bid a very long shot, and he received no small amount of written abuse from fellow musicians, fans and others.

They were talking about this a little on the radio this morning and somehow got to talking about the new Ken doll coming out with a man-bun. One of the DJs commented-- Wait, didn't Gene Simmons invent that?

IIRC, Simmons started wearing his hair in the man bun because he got into Samurai culture. So I doubt he would claim to creating the man bun but one never knows what to expect from his crazy brain.
