"Manga offers consistency in storylines & creative teams"

So quality wins over time? Imagine that.

American automakers still haven't learned that lesson. The Japanese have.

Interesting read.  I'd love to read some manga but I'm one of those "no idea where to start" people.  The article makes a lot of really salient points - North American comics have really become a "LOOK HERE! Joe and Suzie Smith are doing Spider-Man!" -- only to have Joe and Suzie leave after 6 issues and then the book gets "rebooted" for the next team with Joe and Suzie's work never spoken of again.  It sounds as though the manga books are all Sim's Cerebus - one creator, one story, told over decades and that's very appealing.  Thanks for posting this.

That's really arguing creator-owned vs. corporate-owned, not manga vs. NA comics.

"American comics are pretty heavily written, mostly text-driven" hm Really? That seems like the opposite of what people are always complaining about.

Then why isn't manga dead? Manga sucks.

I agreed with the overall points that were given but I don't think I could ever get into Manga. If I had to choose between Manga or nothing, I would go with nothing.

You might as well say you don't like comics then. 2c

(shrug)Then you are missing some masterpieces that stand for his own right next to works like Watchmen, Batman TDKR, etc, you name it.

Plenty of reasons not to try manga:

1 - don't like the digest format

2 - wouldn't know where to start

And the last two, however unfair the generalization might be:

3 - don't like the round-eye art style

4 - think most of it is a vehicle to sell the Japanese schoolgirl/schoolboy fetish

I've never tried it myself because I never liked the art.  My X-men\Wolverine collection ends at 304 and 75 respectively for two reasons.

1. No more for adamantium Wolverine...  bone claws...   no way!  That revelation ruined my favorite issue of all time (Wolverine 10).

2. I never could hack the manga style artwork.  Adam Kubert and Joe M. were two perfectly serviceable/borderline-fantastic artists until that influence took over.  I know that doesn't represent the real thing, but the negative association is still there.  Also, my favorite villain Sabretooth just looked like a clown in those issues.

Uncanny X-Men 328 - Sabretooth - Psylocke - Psylock - Fight - Joe Madureira

Compare this to the classiness of the 212/213, 221/222, and Wolverine 10, or even Iron Fist 14 version of the character.  It's probably just personal taste, but to me it just not the same.

Yes, obviously, because I am not allowed to have my own personal preference of what I enjoy. Wow...really Logan?

Yes really, Manga means comics. They cover a very broad section of styles and genres. I know most people think of something very specific when they hear the word "manga" or "anime"...I used to think the same thing until I was shown my ignorance.

The point about cover artists and previewing a book is interesting. You really can't judge a comic by the cover anymore, and that makes me less likely to pick up a book with a catchy cover.

Comic book covers have become soft pornography and GQ photo shoots.

As a fellow bone claw era hater, I recommend you pick up 145-189.

" One trend that has soured me on a lot of American comics recently (not just Marvel and DC) is the overwhelming trend toward "dark/gritty/serious" -- to the point where it just feels like EVERY story is seen through a grimy, dark filter. "

Lot of points of criticism of Modern American comicbooks.

And a lot of reasons that folks dislike Manga and Anime too.

One could write a blog ticking-off all the criticisms of these too.
