2 Copies of Hulk 181 - which one to sell?
1 1

OK, here's the situation. I need to raise some cash and I am lucky enough to have two copies of Hulk 181. I don't really need to have two copies of the same book so I'm quite happy to let one go. The problem is that I'm not sure which one to sell. One of these is a CGC 4.0 signed by Herb Trimpe while the other is a raw 4.0. My gut tells me to sell the raw copy and keep the slabbed one as that has the added value from Trimpe's signature and also being graded by CGC. Obviously, going with that option means that I can't read the slabbed copy but I'm sure that there must be a cheap reprint that I can use as a reading copy. Any suggestions as to what I should do?

does the CGC Trimpe copy have sentimental value for you? If no then I would sell the CGC book.

No, It doesn't have any particular sentimental value for me. I'm guessing that a raw 4.0 is currently going for $800 and a CGC SS in the same grade for $900 though I could be way off with that.

Since slabbed books normally tends to sell for more money, then you should probably get the raw one slabbed to see where it comes in on the grading scale.

Since the Hulk 181 is a definitely long time key, you should then sell off the lower grade copy and hold onto the higher grade copy since it should continue to go up in value over the long term.  If it was a hyped movie related book such as Marvel Preview 4, Iron Man 55, NM 98, or anything like that you should sell the higher grade copy and keep the lower grade copy since it might not even retain its current value over the long term.  hm

If they both come out as graded 4.0 copies, I guess it's up to you to decide if the signature has any sentimental value to you, or if you think it adds any resale value to the book, or if it will be seen as a negative.  Especially since lots of collectors out there don't care to have Signature books, as they see them as almost being defaced.

Those collectors are wrong, in the long term.  When all the artists and creators are dead, there will be tens of thousands of unsigned books and who knows how many reprints of reprints of early books like first Wolverine which are printed long after the creators are gone.  They'll all be unsigned.  The ones that are signed now may seem like they're "everywhere" but every single example of a collectible of any kind (painting, etching, lithograph, first edition book) is worth more when the original artist/writer/creator signed it versus an unsigned one that's otherwise identical.  Imagine pretending that Mickey Mantle "defaced" an otherwise great example of a 1950s American League baseball with no writing on it.

There's no reason comics will be any different... our "hall of famers" are mostly still alive, and we're ridiculous if we're thinking they're "defacing" their own creations.

I've the same question ahead of me one day, though probably not tomorrow or the next day.

Mine are different, though, a slabbed CGC 5.0 with Trimpe signature on outside of case, and a raw 7.0.  I'm leaning toward keeping the higher grade raw copy.

sell the CGC book.  Your gut is wrong.

Seriously though, whenever selling comics in order to get the most bang for my buck I grade key issues.  You have the perfect situation for this.

I agree with several in this thread.  Slab the raw copy and see what is what.  Then make your choice.  If you have sentimental value towards the Herb SS, then I think the choice is obvious.

Though I like that idea, I live in the UK and the cost of getting the raw copy slabbed and then having it shipped back to me is too prohibitive at this time. As I said in my original post, I need to raise some cash and I need to figure out which one of my Hulk 181s do I sell in order to get some decent coin.
