Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, two of the co-creators and executive producers of the DC Entertainment-HBO Max adult animated series “Harley Quinn,” say that they also approached the show from a different perspective. Having a strong background in writing sitcoms, the duo compares the series to “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” — “if Mary killed a bunch of people,” in Schumacker ’s words, as Harley (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) and her compatriots often engage in acts of incredible brutality that feed into the show’s outrageous humor.

“Harley Quinn” is also unique among the current crop of comic content in that its main character and all of her closest allies are villains rather than heroes in the DC canon. That allows the show to do different things with the characters that heroes simply cannot do — at least according to DC.

“It’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway,” says Halpern. “A perfect example of that is in this third season of ‘Harley’ [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.’”

Imagine thinking that Batman having sex with his best friends super younger daughter on a roof is totally fine for his character, but THIS is where they draw the line for animated stuff?

Listen, Batman does it all. Adam West and Frank Gorshin were kicked out of an orgy because they were were determined to stay in-character as Batman and the Riddler - Adam West doing anything, while in full character, pretty much counts as established Batman canon. You can't change my mind, this is just how it works and how much of a treasure West was.

Not to worry. Social media is having a grand time calling out the WB selective concerns with this news.

The first two seasons of Harley Quinn saw Harleen Quinzel assembling a group of supervillain criminals to help in ascending the ranks of the DC Universe roster of antagonists, with the likes of Clayface, Dr. Psycho, Poison Ivy, and King Shark joining her side. First premiering in 2019, the animated series ran for twenty-six episodes over the course of two seasons, with a third season confirmed to be in the works following the arrival of last year's DC Fandome. While rumors have swirled that the third season is set to arrive later this year, no official release date has been revealed when it comes to the return of Harley and her friends.

Toonami shared the announcement that a Harley Quinn marathon would be taking place on August 7th, from 10PM to 5AM, most likely covering the first handful of episodes that helped create one of the best-animated series in the roster of DC's Universe.

To celebrate the upcoming release of The Suicide Squad in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th, Toonami will be airing the first season of DC Universe Harley Quinn on Saturday, August 7th. Running from 10:30PM to 5:00AM EST. This means fans will get to see the entire run of that first season, and then check out the second season with HBO Max (along with potentially watching The Suicide Squad over that same weekend) soon after.
