Not at all, I was just wondering who they were at the time of the pics.  Otherwise it's a bunch of cool old pics and names, but a missed opportunity to explain to the ignorant such as myself who they were.

No worries. I’ll do what I can to fill in some holes. Even some of them are mysteries to me. I had a lot of family in fandom beginning in the dark ages of the 40’s and 50’s on up and if some of them were still around it probably would be easier to identify more.

Where are all the comic book pics of this time at (shrug)

kirk alyn looking at action 63 at houstoncon 1971.jpg

I can put some context to this photo...it was taken at the 1967 HoustonCon. Kirk Alyn, who lived in Houston for the last years of his life, was a guest. The fan in the Superman costume is Ken Donnell, a founder of the Houston Comic Collectors Association, and one of the early driving forces of Houston fandom. Ken opened a print shop in the early 70's and almost all of the comics related flyers, program books, and fanzines from this area were printed there. In the early 90's he bought an old used book store here called Northside Book Emporium. It was originally well known in comics circles here as being one of the first places in Houston that sold used comics. Less well known was that it was a meeting place for the Klan. It had fallen into hard times when Ken bought it and turned it into a full fledged comic shop. He had a lot of success with it primarily because he hired a local fan named Jermaine Rogers to manage it. Jermaine has gone on to be a very famous concert poster artist. Northside is no longer around but Ken is still attending our monthly old-timer comic meetings.

Here's a link to my friend Lewis' website....... lots off really cool anecdotes and memories about collecting from the 60's on........

http://pristine.webspaceforme.net/sandvox3/

..... everything from San Diego to a Marvel Back issue List from the mid 60's to the audio tapes of the CBM Interview with Robert Bell with segments that were edited out of the article due to size constraints. Easily several hours of reading. GOD BLESS...

Also I think the photo is from 71’ not 67’. It’s credited elsewhere at least as such on the Houston cons 40th anniversary site:

SUPERBOY MEETS SUPERMAN - Here's Ken Donnell posing with Kirk Alyn at Houstoncon 71. Kirk held the all-time record for five Houstoncon appearances. '71 was his first convention...ever. BTW, check out some of the one-sheets for sale at Roy's table behind Ken: Bedlam, Captain America, The Lone Ranger, an early Tim McCoy, Charlie Chan at the Wax Museum, Disney's The Reluctant Dragon and Gangster's Boy. That's Weege peeking out from behind Ken....

Wow. So maybe that picture was taken later. If that is a Wilene then it is probably Wilene Blair, former wife of Earl Blair, another original Houston Con original. Ken and Earl regularly post on the Houston Comic Fandom page on Facebook and I thought Ken said that picture was from earlier than 1974.

Weege (Walter Irwin) sold me his Archie collect many years ago. I wish I had hung onto some of them. I think I sold the #1 (probably a good) for about $300!

Thanks for that! I am in some of the 40th anniversary pictures. I have never found a photo of me from the old conventions. We had a house fire in 1981 and all of our family photos burned. There is one pic from the 1978 con that I may be in the background of, but it is impossible to be certain. And I am just off camera when those pics from 1979 of the Camelot table were taken.

This is from the 1979 con. I would have been 16. The head right behind Roy's shoulder might be mine but I don't remember having a blue shirt with a yellow collar.
