Claiming that this movie had "no marketing budget" to excuse its 150M money losing run is prima facia, ridiculous fanboi cope.  This movie is a catastrophic failure, only exceeded by the marvels which was one of the biggest money losing flops not only just for the "mcu" or "Disney" but all of cinema.  Right along with the Flash for the WB.  This movie is "only" as disastrous as black adam was which itself was awful enough to bring down an entire studio and franchise of movies.

And Yes Aquaturd had AT LEAST a 100M worldwide  marketing expense, and FYI, "marketing" is more than just billboards and TV spots.  (thumbsu

Likewise, one can't argue that audience awareness for this was low, because

  • This was the *5th* film featuring Momoa as Aquaman
  • The first film made over $1.1 billion
  • The Johnny Depp / Amber Heard trial gave this oodles of publicity a full year+ before release - with countless articles questioning whether Heard's role would be diminished or eliminated

No - audiences knew what this was - and simply opted out.

What is even being argued about here?

This movie is not underperforming because of lack of advertising.  I'd wager everyone who might possibly have been interested in an Aquaman follow-up was/is well aware.

It's just that a lot less people are interested this time around (for reasons...)

Also, man, it wasn't great.  It wasn't terrible mind you, but, not great.  And it needed to be great to overcome lack of interest.

First off, better to not let the Negative Ninnies twist what is being said. You jumped in assuming it was implied JUST limit advertising contributed to its situation. That is NOT what I implied. But it sure doesn't help Gunn tampered with the finished product and then noted in advance it didn't factor into the go-forward plan.

What was implied by others was that it had the normal P&A budget, which clearly it was far less focused on than the solo 2018 film.

Now are we aligned?

?

What was "implied?"

@ChillMan stated it "had no marketing budget" - which was obviously hyperbole - but even so, both unwarranted and irrelevant.

Unwarranted, because every available source points to its having a normal P&A budget (of ~$100M) for a $200+ million tentpole.

And irrelevant, because the marketing budget (or lack thereof) is like 5th or 6th on the list of reasons the film failed.

Goes to demonstrate how some quickly read so they get back to hearing themselves post.

It wasn't implied - it was flat-out said.

It had a normal P&A budget of ~$100M.

Bingo. And this was not a normal release due to the studio changeup in focus with Gunn and Safran.

Hey now - this is only the 8th blatant box office failure in a row.

  • Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
  • Blue Beetle
  • The Flash
  • Shazam! Fury of the Gods
  • Black Adam
  • The Suicide Squad
  • Wonder Woman 1984
  • Birds of Prey

But no worries - Jason Momoa can revive his career by headlining Medellin next.

I am not arguing those movies are box office duds, but a number of the post-Endgame Marvel studios films have not done well either. The market is clearly saying give us the Tier 1 characters on the big scream and leave everyone else as a supporting character in a feature film or maybe a season two of streaming.

It's 2024.  Things are different now.

The big movie studios don't make their money from the box office and giving the people what they want.

Aquaman 2 is a product from a few years ago...and we know how the superhero game is obsessive...A2 was targeted for destruction for over a year.

LOL never in history has the media trumpeted quotes & misquotes from the star of a big movie that he's done and doesn't care about the movie.  Lies & lies & lies about audiences walking out of test screenings...with ZERO pushback from Gunn or anyone.  No premiere.  Only 1 YouTube ad that didn't get promoted.

Not to mention how the reviews are such blatant lies.  Conservative sites all lied for rage-clicks.  While saying Godzilla is a good movie.

I wasn't trying to make this a DC v. Marvel thing but no - the MCU absolutely killed the DCEU over the same time period.

  • 10 films released (vs. 8)
  • 4 of which grossed $800+ million
  • Only 1 DCEU film during that time period even touched $400M (Aquaman 2, which will do so soon)

Even 3 Marvel films that weren't (shall we say) good by any stretch of the imagination still were solid commercial successes. They were:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy 3: $845+ million
  • Black Panther 2: $859+ million
  • Doctor Strange 2: $955+ million

None of these are A-list comic book characters, whereas Wonder Woman arguably is.

Yaaaaaay!

A DCEU film’s finally gonna’ break $400M worldwide!

:whee:

8th time’s the charm I guess.

Just gonna’ finish, err… $700 million or so behind the first Aquaman film.
