Darkowl
I recently finished this 1985 mini series written by Bill Mantlo. I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised by how fun this read was. It was wacky, original, and entertaining. They say Mantlo was one of the best writers of this era, and I can totally see why. Weird to think that I probably never would have read this, or would even know who Rocket was if it wasn't for GOTG. What an underrated character/mini series. As a side note, it's good to see recent pictures of Mantlo smiling at the (depressing) rest home he lives in. Popular Post Bird
He was in a bad way for a long time but apparently (according to his brother) the money he received from GotG has enabled him to get more and better care and that has really improved the quality of his life. While his story is ultimately very tragic it has taken a very positive spin and while Traumatic Brain Injury is devastating the improvements his life has experienced in the last few years are a blessing for him and his family. Xenosmilus
Wow that sucks. Stupid question but I wonder if he gets any residuals from Marvel/Disney with the success from GOTG? Probably not...

I wondered that too, but I doubt it since I'm pretty sure he doesn't own any of the rights. I could be wrong though. It would be a great PR show for them if they (Disney and maybe even Cooper) did something nice for the guy. Did he create RR? He and Keith Giffen created Rocket, and his creation was heavily inspired from the Beatles song Rocky Raccoon. mysterymachine

A couple of guys from Marvel did make it possible for Mantlo to watch a screening of GOTG. https://www.geeksofdoom.com/2014/08/04/marvel-screens-guardians-of-the-galaxy-for-ailing-rocket-raccoon-creator-bill-mantlo Xenosmilus

Residuals I don't know, but as I alluded to in the post above yours they paid him enough to improve his life considerably. article on him being paid mysterymachine and Xenosmilus 1
RCheli
I suspect that a lot of his work is coming back into print because of the GOTG movie, so he's getting something.

rgtichy
Wow, what a tragic story. Had no idea about that. I enjoyed Rocket Raccoon back in the day. AND, I liked the Mike Mignola artwork, too. Edited January 5, 2021 by rgtichy

rgtichy
I agree. But the one on bird's comment works to read about Mantlo.

I was also pointing out that the billmantlo web page seems like it is no longer available. That can sometimes indicate something else also going on. The Less Blob
I was not aware of this either. really sad. it is why I make my youngest always wear a helmet and i do as well. My teen flat out refuses and it is very worrisome.
Jeffro.
Very sad about Mantlo but I'm glad he's doing better. Still one of my favorite writers of the era. Very prolific and just fun to read
