Kirby Sig - Opinions?
2 2

44 posts in this topic

I just bought an FF10 signed by the King...at least it looks like it. Personally, I'd rather have CGC give it a blue label with Jack Kirby written on first page rather than a horrendous pink cbcs label. Heres my questions:

-Does anybody think this isn't authentic?

-Any info on how horrendous pink cbcs labels are valued? Is it really any better than a gc blue label with a COA from a signature expert?

- Is there any chance this would get a green label, or something that says "name written on first page"?

Thanks!

I'd feel confident it is legit. Pretty darn sure it would get a blue label and not a green label at all.

Problem with grading (and problem I would have as a potential buyer) as that I cannot view the sig. I would have no clue what it looks like. In which case, I would pass on buying such a book of someone, if that makes sense. I would want it raw, as you have it, so I could look at the sig, show it to friends and fellow collectors and perhaps one day get it authenticated.

Great buy! Super jealous.

-Kirby sig looks legit to me.

-I'm not an expert about red labels and value, but just based on my uninformed opinion as someone who likes red labels and owns a bunch, I think key books are still key books - and key books do better in blue CGC. An FF 10 book like yours - I THINK - would do better valuewise as a blue label CGC. Just make sure you take plenty of photographs of the signature before you slab it - and maybe print a photo out and keep it in the bag with the slab with it so you can always see the sig.

-Sigs on the inside won't get green label. You'll get a blue label. If you're lucky, it'll say who signed it - but sometimes they don't say.

I agree...if I end up slabbing it, I'm going to document the hell out of it, and even go as far as getting a color print (possibly on newsprint) to simulate the page.  I'll keep it together with a COA from JSA (hopefully). It'll all go with in the mylar with the slab. Hopefully it'll be then next best thing.

If they won't say who signed it, I wont get it slabbed. That wold be a travesty.

If the grader can tell who's name it is, it has a better chance of being noted on the label...

Did not know that. What threw me off was that I have books that were signed on the inside at the same time when I was a kid-

But it makes sense that maybe the one sig was more legible. Thanks, The Lions Den.

Looks just like the sig I have on my Demon #1. I showed that to several people, incl a big sig collector, and all thought it looked like the real thing.   I had bought it back ~1980 so  I imagine that prob helps too (not a lot of reason to forge it back then, I'd think)

As far as your 2nd question, earlier this year I watched an Ebay auction for a Demon 1 8.0 with that label go for ~$600 and a Machine Man 1 go for ~$500

@James J Johnson I think your the one who is pretty good on noticing legit signatures, if I'm mistaken then that's my bad :foryou:

Here is a Kirby sig thread :)

HumanTorch knows Kirby signatures too. He stated this one is good and I completely agree. No question about it. Everything is proper. Nice piece of hobby history, FF 10 + Kirby sig = :cloud9:

Beautiful! And legit. If you're submitting it to CGC, a photo quality copy of the splash page would be a nice addition to keep in a large mylar with the book/slab, so you can view the splash page any time you'd like to. (worship)

Very nice piece.

Totally agree...and I'm going to have it printed on newsprint to simulate the page as close as possible (I'm going to miss seeing the real thing, so this is as close as I can get)

The fact that its not on a major key makes me think its the real deal.

The signature speaks for itself here. If it was signed on a toaster, with a paint marker, it's still Kirby's vibe. See enough of the real deal and your sensitivity to Kirby's signature becomes highly attuned for authenticity. no exemplars necessary for comparison. It's the difference between a general authenticator and a specialist. A Kirby signature arrives at a company that accepts tens of thousands of different signer's autographs for evaluation and unless it's blatantly horrific, a total joke, the first thing they do is start pulling up their exemplar file and making comparisons. This is not the ideal way to authenticate, having it done by a "jack of all trades" with a file of exemplars. You send a particular signer's autograph to the appropriate specialist, an autograph guy like Frank Caiazzo, who only authenticates Beatles autographs, and in most cases, he knows instantly, without the need for reference. You get a LOA from Frank on a Beatles autograph and that's gospel. That trumps any opinions of PSA, JSA, or anyone else.

I can tell you with all assurance that what this is signed on has nothing to do with its authenticity. It's authentic because the signature speaks for itself. It's Kirby's vibe.
