35 cent Variant List-Help wanted

Lighthouse, I totally agree with you theory as a more complicated version of what I propose. I think the whole process was likely more controlled and manipulated than we generally suspect and that few cities (in many instances, the word "towns" is probably more appropriate) got all of the issues, while others received only certain ones. I think we all have some suspicions as to were certain books might have been distributed. For instance, I have found two copies of a Conan book in a city where I have never seen another 35 cent variant. Similarly, I've recently come to suspect yet another small city of having received certain issues. Collections like Daeth's, and the collection I got 33 from, however, also lead me to believe that a few towns received most of them. I'm sure they analyzed the return rate on a number of levels and designed their studies so results can be examined with and without geography as a factor.

A lot of folks have been curious as to how the condition of the "Cape Fear" collection panned out.I have bought about a dozen or so 35 centers since I bought these at various prices. The common thread of most eBay books has been overgrading. There has been some thought as to whether I paid more than I should for the Cape Fear books confused-smiley-013.gif or whether the books would turn out as good as expected.Daethwalker had originally estimated an average grade of VF/NM (9.0). My estimate comes a bit closer to 8.5 maybe 8.75, on average.

After I graded these I wondered if I might have been overly strict with my grades here. There were a few books with a folded corner. no color break that I dropped to 7.0-7.5. I just did a trade with Darth. One CGC book that had two color breaking creases on a front cover got an 8.0. So, I might have been harsh. Anyway it was a relief to get books that actually came in pretty close to estimates. If paying 60-70 bucks for books in VG to Fine is what you get on eBay, my experience, this collection will have turned out to be a relative

I know everybody here probably reads CBG regularly. As of now a book in 9.0 sells for almost 4X what a book in 7.0 sells for. With that here are the books and grades.

Because there aren't any copies of KaZar 16 with a 25c cover price...

Yes, unless you own a shop. They sell pretty easily for me at around $2-3 a piece...

Because it's made from people...

No. Marvel was on crack that summer and couldn't make up their mind what their trade dress was supposed to be...

These were all purchased new, in and around the Wilmington, N.C. area.

Two shops exist today. Fan Boys and Memory Lane. Neither have variants for sale. But, I do know that the owner or manager of Memory Lane collects both 30 and 35 cent variants and also holds doubles for favorite customers. He's offered to do the same for me. From conversations I had with him, there are at least 2 other existing collections in Wilmington, including his.

I do think mine was probably the largest and of better quality. Simply because it's a one-owner collection bought new. Both of the other collections were basically "collected" years later.

As far as how plentiful these variants are, I can only speak from my own experience with them here in Wilmington. I'd have to agree with other statements that there were various print runs. Probably determined by the issue sales of various titles.

From what I can remember, the ratio of 35 cent variants to normal priced issues, varied from store to store and title to title. And even seemed to change from month to month. But, if I recall correctly, it was usually the "best sellers" that came in priced at 35 cents and the less popular titles priced at 30 cents.

I also seem to recall a big "uproar" about this among the fans. So, for those looking for further info about these, I would check out the "fan mail" that gets posted and answered on the various "Mail Pages" of both the later issues of the variants and maybe some of the other issues posted a few months later. I'd do the same with any "Fan Based" Mags or comics that came out in that same time period.

I also know that me and my brother both actively tried to find the 30 cent versions. I was pretty sure this was because we couldn't afford the extra 5 cents per comic ( which could add up when buying 15 - 75 titles a month). But, after noticing that I also seem to have both versions of some of the titles, I'm starting to think we may have been trying to get both versions for our collection. But, we usually ended up with only the 35 cent variant. So, at least for Wilmington, the majority of available comics at the time were the 35 cent version.

So, it's possible all of the variants were bought up at the time of printing. At least when they could be found. And few, if any were part of your average returns.

But, if they were bought up by collectors and speculators at the time, then to me, that verifies other's beliefs that these were extremely small print runs. Because, if they were not, then where are all of the speculators? As high as prices are right now, I'd think more would be showing up on ebay and other places.

In the spirit of "collusion" I just thought I would point out that of the Motor City auctions, the only one I really need is Defenders 52. I had thoughts about going after the others in order to get some dupes. If anybody has thoughts on these send me a PM, maybe we can figure out how not to cost each other money.

Well since there have been no posts here in about a week and some new discoveries have been made, (it has also been a very slow day at work) I figure this is a good time for a little 35 cent variant recap. grin.gif

In the past month Hulk 216, SVTU 12, Rawhide Kid 141, Marvel Presents 11-12 and Powerman 47 have all been verified to exist.

Only Kid Colt 218-219, Rawhide Kid 140, Sgt. Fury 141(Does 4Gemworks have one?) and SVTU 13 have not been seen. Marvel Super Action 2 and TOD 59 have some second-hand evidence of existence through CBM and CGC. Regardless, only 7 issues need to be verified before a complete set is verified.

So, of the 182 possible variant comics only about 4% are yet undiscovered. There has also been at least 1 variant found for each of the 51 titles.

Does anybody know of any evidence for the remaining issues? Does Cosmic-Spider-Man have some of them perhaps? Motor City? Anyone?

Did Lighthouse find any when he visited the dealer he found the KC 220 at?

Will all of these be discovered by the end of the year?

What will be the elusive last variant found? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Just some thoughts and questions from a thoroughly bored worker! thumbsup2.gif
