While I don't have the books I do have the grades. Fortunately I was within .08 of the grades I had estimated, meaning I'm pretty happy overall. Original -script is shown with actual grades noted to the right. I should note that when I submit to CGC for my purposes, I use the lowest number. As you can see, where I had wishful thinking, it didn't work out on average just about at all! To make my life simple I also assign alternate numbers to certain grades. For example for a 9.2 I use 9.5, for 9.4 I use 10.0, for 9.6 I use 10.5. This allows me to be somewhat consistent within the entire analysis. Assuming higher grade books are geometrically more valuable, this does not take that into account as the scale obove is linear. A geometric scale would give a little more weight to the upside, I think.

A lot of folks have been curious as to how the condition of the "Cape Fear" collection panned out.I have bought about a dozen or so 35 centers since I bought these at various prices. The common thread of most eBay books has been overgrading. There has been some thought as to whether I paid more than I should for the Cape Fear books confused-smiley-013.gif or whether the books would turn out as good as expected.Daethwalker had originally estimated an average grade of VF/NM (9.0). My estimate comes a bit closer to 8.5 maybe 8.75, on average.

My methodology actualy resulted in a net grade on average of 8.62 abit better than VF+, obviously.

After I graded these I wondered if I might have been overly strict with my grades here. There were a few books with a folded corner. no color break that I dropped to 7.0-7.5. I just did a trade with Darth. One CGC book that had two color breaking creases on a front cover got an 8.0. So, I might have been harsh. Anyway it was a relief to get books that actually came in pretty close to estimates. If paying 60-70 bucks for books in VG to Fine is what you get on eBay, my experience, this collection will have turned out to be a relative

I know everybody here probably reads CBG regularly. As of now a book in 9.0 sells for almost 4X what a book in 7.0 sells for. With that here are the books and grades.

Excuse all the "sleepers" sleeping.gif it was the only way I could get space between the est grade and the actual grade! 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Here are two new additions to the family: 141 looks to be at least 9.2 while 142 also looks like a 9.2+. However 142 has about a1/4 inch tear on the back cover. Any ideas how much that is "worth". It could have been worse, I got a copy of 143 that had a very old piece of tape on the back!

Glenn - I would grade the 142 lower due to the dings and what appears to be small tears? in the spine around the bottom stape area? Correct me if I'm seeing scanner artifacts. the 141 is drool-worthy thumbsup2.gif Good Job!.

I'll work on getting your data into my little variant spreadsheet. I wish CGC could update the census soon. I was expecting on in time for Megacon, but I'm sure the folks are pretty busy...

It appears to be scanner artifacts. The spine has some very modest markingsion generasl and I can't really say its a stcking crease or what. Other than that the worst defect on the front cover is a typicaL nutsack crease. But no tears. The only other "crease" is a production nutsack crease on the bottom right, invisible on the scan.

BTW, with the tear on the back, I'd have probably topped out my estimate at 8.0 to 8.5 anyway. I was just wondering if I was taking off to much or not enough. CGC tends to be more lenient on back cover damage, but not overly so. Even without the tear, there is just enough commotion around the spine where I would have guessed 9.0. I'm just grateful to have it. thumbsup2.gif

Fake ort not the auction just went over "fair value" in my assesment.

$200 each for the 35 centers and 150 each or the 30 centers+ 1050. That is assuming zero overgrading on non slabbed books. Good luck to those left in the hunt.

I don't know if the seller is someone I should know or if he contacted me through my site, but I got an email (not through ebay) encouraging me to bid. I agree with Glenn-assuming the grading is right-on, this is already as high as it "should" go.

Just wanted to post here: I was at a Detroit show this weekend and Motor City Comics had quite a few 35 cent variants for sale, most in nice shape. I am not a variant collector, but I did talk to the Motor City guys, who told me variant collecting is going to explode this year.

The only copy I looked at was an Avengers #161 in VF+/NM, which they priced at $150, I believe.

Anyway, just FYI. Contact Motor City comics if interested thumbsup2.gif

They've actually been a topic of discussion around here before. It's well known that they have a good stock of 35 cent variants. What's annoying is that they're very secretive about them and they basically refused to sell them for some time.

Case in point: they won't even tell me if they have a Daredevil 148 35 cent variant. They won't say yes or no either way. Why? I don't know. I can't figure it out. My best guess it that they're afraid of the huge offer I will make them for any complete copy insane.gif
