WonderCon, San Francisco

Thanx for the Wondercon report pov! I love hearing about other collectors' comic con experiences. It's a vicarious experience; like I was there with you thumbing through the boxes of pre code. BTW, did you meet up with any board members?

Not yet but maybe tomorrow! Remember - my pic ios on the boards here. I will be dressed conservatively tomorrow. Tan wool Cricketeer slack, a burgundy collared shirt and a 3/4 leangth dark lightweight thin coat. So stick the head on the clothes and say YO POV!

Hmmm.. I usually go to WonderCon for only 1 day even though it's in my backyard because it tends to be really small (compared to San Diego). This year is no different actually. Because it's at Moscone, it feels even smaller than when it was in Oakland. It's hard to justify going all three days unless you go for the programming, the creators, or just really want to dig through the dealers' stuff.

There is a dealer that has Raw NM/M Boston Pedigree books in three or four short boxes though. He's pricing them at 2x guide I think.

Well if oyu know San Francisco you know if it HUGE in comparison for available comics around here! grin.gif

I spent more than I expected the first day - was gonna try a 50/50 - but found a lot of nice shape books I really wanted - but the time I spent there - about 4 hours - was dedicated to only one thing - finding pre-code horror. Tomorrow the pressure will be off and I will actually look around and see what is happening! May buy a few videos, want to check out that League of Extraordinary Gentlemen TPB, pick up some readers of things like Ghost Rider, Red Sonja, Werewolf By Night (to fill in the numbers from the MajorKhaos collection I picked up on ebay) and other BA fun books, see if Cassandra Peterson is gonna be there (heard after I left she was there today and not tomorrow as advertised on the web site) and just basically see what I missed today! And if I have a few bucks left over - rumor was there is a low grade Horrific 3 there - couldn't find it today - maybe tomorrow! grin.gif

Yes, Cassandra Peterson was there signing stuff and posing for photos in Artists Alley.

There's a dealer that has a bunch of 70's Horror books (including Werewolf by Night, Tomb of Dracula, etc.) selling them for $1 each. (Some are VF-NM or have multiple copies.) I saw multiple Marvel Feature #1's starring Red Sonja going for a buck there too. The dealer's store is called Heroes'. He's right across from the guy selling the Boston Pedigree comics. He's got some great stuff selling for $1. (I picked up a bunch of 12 centers for a buck each.)

Sweet! Thanks for the tip! After getting 17 precodes it is gonna feel like I am drowning when I come back with about 100 SA/BA for reading! lol

yo bro, i was working the crowd control on saturday for "elvira" but my highlight of the afternoon was escorting craig fessel the original artist of "sandman" from GA adventure comics in the 40's back to his bus stop along with his lovely wife. i'll post his "appreication of me" when i find a scanner that works! laugh.gif

You're a volunteer at WonderCon? There were long lines for Cassandra Peterson (for whatever reason), and Artists Alley in general was surprisingly pretty crowded (since it was Saturday.)

Travis Charest had a huge line. I saw Jim Lee being interviewed for television and he had a pretty large crowd waiting for him too.

I was selling at the Sacramento Show a couple of months ago and I was set up across the aisle from Ron Lim who was there selling some action figures or something. (He lives in the Sacramento area.) I had a stack of unread Spider-man Unlimited #1's but I didn't sell any even with the artist right there.

(Actually, I ended up giving them away free with purchases and to little kids all the while telling them that they could get it signed by the guy across the aisle.) It kind of sucks when your friend has to loan people the sharpie marker to get their books signed too...

One year, you're the hottest artist around, the next year no one knows your name. (Ron Lim may be a bad example though. Never been a fan of his work really... to put it politely.)

I'm glad you did well Pov. I was kind of disappointed. It was smaller than I expected. Last time I went to a Wondercon was over 10 years ago and I seem to remember it being much bigger. There wasn't that much in the way of HG raw silver and what there was, was overpriced. I mean 2x NM guide for VF/NM overpriced. A-1 comics had some good stuff as did Nationwide and Redbeards but I heard a lot of " I sold a lot of HG on Friday" so maybe I just missed out. Harley Yee was disapponting. He had a lot of material but was overpriced IMO. $4500 for a VF FF #4 with Marvel chipping? I think he had it graded as NM, but I didn't think NM could have chipping. There did seem to be a lot of well priced mid to low grade stuff. Perhaps the Pittsburgh con took away some of the dealers that would otherwise have been out for Wondercon. Funny, but it seemed like I spent more time at the Aria Giovanni booth than any of the comic booths:) Wonder why? grin.gif

see if Cassandra Peterson is gonna be there

I used to know a woman named Cassandra Peterson. She was a regular customer of mine when I worked at the photo place in Hollywood. Really nice woman with long red hair. She landed a local TV gig playing "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" that went national. Is it the same Cassandra that you're talking about?

She's my old neighbor's cousin! I'll never forget the day that Elvira came to the neighborhood in her giant RV... (And no, I'm not kidding. Elvira came to my cul-de-sac and she drove a giant RV!)

Heroes is usually my first stop when I go to San Diego. Like was previously mentioned, they have lots of unread copies selling cheap. Also, most of their books are priced at 50% guide for nice unread 1970s books! smile.gif

Where is Heroes? I went to Southern California Comics the other day, and they have a ton of stuff for sale, including a lot of nice golden age and silver age comics. Unfortunately, everything was overgraded. I picked up about 6 supposed NM books to buy, and then took them out of the mylar and none graded higher than a VF. The SD Comic Con should be fun!

Hey Joanna! Conrats on reaching Carpal!!!!!!!!!!!

Woo Woo!! Thanks for the con rats!

I wish I could remember who it was who told me that I'd never stick around cuz I'm a 'girl'. I may be female, but I LOVE COMICS, dagnabbit! So there.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to drive an RV to Khaos's house, ring the doorbell and then drive off. But don't tell him, cuz he'll think it's Elvira!
