I was photographing some books for the Thrifty Grocer thread in the Golden Age section, and I happened across some Bob Powell art on an Atlas Subby story that always made me cringe a little bit. Now Bob Powell was a fine artist, but somehow, he was unaware that the Sub-mariner had pointed ears and drew the entire story that way (which made me recall that his Subby story in Men's Adventures #27 was the same way). Flash forward to yesterday, and I'm talking to a buddy about that and the fact that I've never really heard anyone mention that the Wally Wood rendition of Subby on the classic cover (and story) of Daredevil #7 likewise depicts a rounded ear Subby. Now, I'd be CERTAIN that people have noticed it before, but can't recall anyone mentioning it. Now, that has sent me down a rabbit hole of investigating how other artists have drawn Subby (just looking into it right now actually). This should be fun!!!  Below the DD #7 cover is some art from the Atlas issue of Human Torch #36 with Subby art by Bob Powell.

Now Kirby appeared to remember that Subby was born with pointed ears. A few examples in no particular order.

Gene Colan had gotten the memo (TTA 82 & Subby #1) as did Marie Severin (Subby #s 12 & 19), so it's odd to me that other artists didn't seem to know of Subby's Vulcan-like ear appearance.

Sadly, Subby's daddy, Bill Everett didn't get a solo cover assignment on his character in the Silver Age, but this issue got a collaborative effort from Gene Colan and Bill Everett. Subby clearly has pointy ears. Doubtful Everett would miss it if they were omitted.

Likewise, Dan Adkins knew the shape of Subby's ears.

When they gave me the camera, I usually had relatives holding my books. This one was taken around December 1968.

Maybe this is the right place to ask this question: does anybody know the first time Subby and Spidey met? I can’t think of an earlier meeting than DD #77 but that seems late.

They were both at Reed and Sue's wedding!!

I thought of that but i don't recall a meet and interact scene between them. I guess I should pull it out and look.

I bought this a few years back someone answered an ad I had on these boards. I’m not sure if I over paid or not I just wanted a piece by Everett to hang on my wall as a fan of the character . His pages are very expensive more than I can afford and this piece has such a great golden age feel which is not easy to find . The original owner was looking for Submariner 1 Timely so this was to help generate the funds he needed . I feel blessed to have it !
