My mom talked me into engineering but take art classes as electives.  Art classes didn’t count for humanity classes for an engineering degree so I never took any classes in college.  I never regretted my decision.  Engineering was a blast up to about 10 years ago.  Sadly now it is all about the money and trying to decide the right time to walk away and do something different.

My Fine Arts degree was so useful that I landed in a laboratory measuring reagents, performing titrations and analyzing industrial chemicals. Maybe my resume got shuffled into the wrong pile or the HR department had a sense of humor that was above my pay grade.   In the end, everything worked out to my satisfaction, but it’s still an amusing story in retrospect.

Life definitely takes some interesting twist and turns.  I left an awesome company in the Bay Area and took a job at a 3rd tier crappy company going no place fast but planned maybe I would work there two years max and it was a good way to leave the Bay Area (CA is crazy expensive).  Well the crappy company I worked at got bought for a pretty decent price and then the new parent company turned us around and made us highly profitable.   All of it was accidental, nothing planned, just life happened.  Could have just as easily gone the opposite direction.  Even getting a PhD was accidental.  Met some guy as I graduated with my BS and he said “when do you start grad school”. I looked at him in a odd way but next thing I knew I was signing up for grad school part time.  Same way with a PhD.  Finished my masters and then got called by a professor who asked me if I wanted to I do a PhD.  Next thing I know I am quitting my job and going back to school full time.  Getting the PhD opened a huge number of opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
