DC and Marvel Price Gaps

So I was doing some ebay scanning the other day and I saw a DC book that I was not even thinking about and could not believe how underpriced it was.  If it were a Marvel book I could almost guarantee that book would be triple the value that it currently is.  Why does it seem that Marvel books shoot up in value more than DC books?  This applies to bronze and modern for sure and I have seen some silver that this would apply to as well.

My guess is movie hype, the mcu has hit after hit after hit and DC has..... well... not that many.  Marvel is willing to take chances on obscure characters and DC is not. How can the company that owns the rights to Justice Society of America, Legion of Superheroes, Uncle Sam and the freedom fighters, The Question, Blue Beetle, Metamorpho, Brainiac, Hawkman etc etc still only focus on Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad and Batman? I mean thank god we at least get Aquaman and Wonder Woman. To marvels credit , when they bring a character to life on the big screen, you really can’t imagine anyone else playing that character,  not in all cases but most. I will say this, you will see a much larger return with DC keys, if/when Warner brothers get their act together.  Hopefully in my lifetime 🙏🏾.

Here is an example, its a bronze book but still.  I can link a modern book that applies too!

Those are major, major characters.  They have some excellent stories over the years.  They have been in cartoons, a tv series and one was in a movie.

Compared to this, I know its 5 years older etc..

5 years older, square bound harder to find in grade, 2nd full wolverine, 1st storm, nightcrawler, colossus, the start of the biggest super hero title/family in comics... really not a comparison with raven, cyborg, and starfire. How about this comparison..about the same:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/BATMAN-251-CGC-8-0-CLASSIC-JOKER-COVER-NEAL-ADAMS-1973/264872863079?epid=85520110&hash=item3daba72567:g:QG4AAOSwzC1fWTQL     https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uncanny-X-Men-94-CGC-8-0-VF-featuring-the-1st-new-X-Men-team/303706485682?hash=item46b65133b2:g:6y0AAOSwUvFfcDXM    roughly the same price, x-men 94 is kind of a historical start of a run, batman 251 has a cool cover...

Raven, Cyborg and Starfire are very popular characters in DC.  Its crazy to see their 1st app priced so low.  I also think Batman 656 came in a little low as well too!

It went for $650, right? This one was $825: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Uncanny-X-Men-94-CGC-8-0-VF-featuring-the-1st-new-X-Men-team/303706485682?hash=item46b65133b2:g:6y0AAOSwUvFfcDXM

$825 is not enough? It is an 80s book. There are a lot out there. How many 80s DC or Marvel books are even close to that? ASM 300? ASM 238 (only due to the tatooz is it that expensive).

"Popular characters in DC" .. storm is an intergalactic star and colosus has been the hilarious straight man in two deadpool movies!   If it had been the first appearance of Beast Boy too you might have an argument...

This is certainly one of the problem with the DC films. Marvel casts very well and makes viewers identify the MCU characters with their portraying actors (with very few exceptions). People get excited about Iron Man not just because the films are good, but because they see that character through the lens of Robert Downey, Jr., and so on. It is a strategy that is not without risk, as the sad passing of Chadwick Boseman highlights. But it makes people care about the characters, and it gives them a "voice" to read them with when they turn to comic book portrayals.

Whose voice do you associate with Superman? With Batman? With the Joker? Not only does DC struggle to make individually good films or a coherent cinematic universe, they can't keep consistent casting, and they can't seem to keep consistent interpretations of their characters. The Nolan Batman films are recent enough that they're still on people's minds, but even setting them aside as distinct from the DCEU, the Batman we see in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is not remotely the Batman we see in Justice League. I think they have realized that problem, and Gal Godot's Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa's Aquaman are steps the right direction, assuming they can keep the characters attached to the roles and give them sufficiently high-quality scripts. But there's an uphill climb (and frankly, I'm not sure that launching The Batman as a non-DCEU reboot alongside the DCEU is going to help anything).

Which is sort of DC's other problem, and one that isn't unique to the era of blockbuster superhero films. Batman is, at his core, a really, really good character. Over the years, DC has given him a great supporting cast, including arguably the best rogue's gallery in all of comics, and a solid roster of allies. But... the world they've created is supposed to be about other stories, too. I get it, the company is literally named after the comic book where Batman debuted. A lot of the time, everything in DC (except maybe Superman, but sometimes even Superman) only exists to give a broader background to stories about Batman and the Batfamily.

In addition to the other good points made, that 5-year gap is HUGE.  The New Teen Titans came on the scene at the time of the Direct market, so plenty of well-preserved issues in the inventories of most collectors and comics shops.  The New X-Men were sold through spinner racks and newstands as well as whatever fell off the truck in that distribution model.

The cover kills the value of DC Comics Presents #26. I LOVE Teen Titans, but have never had that book high on my list because the cover is so terrible.

There‘s definitely a lot going on there, and not in the best way haha

DC Comics presents doesn't even show Teen Titans on the cover!  Not to mention, half of the "New" Teen Titans were the old ones from the 60s (whereas only cycops was a re-hash and he is the most boring anyway)
