Growing up - What was your Comic Book money's Competition?

Dare I say it.... Early kid (micronauts action figures)

Mid-Teen (clothes) I came from the poor side of town and ended up going to a school with preppies all over the place. These kids had little shiny pennies in their loafers, Polo shirts or Izod. The girls had those little pom-pom balls on their ankle socks that hung over their brand new NIKE shoes. They often talked about vacationing at their summer homes. All I could do was come up with a Fox shirt from JC Penny.

And of course in Gym class many of them had Adidas, while I had to settle for Trax. (7th grade was rough in 1983). So I cut back on comic buying for a while to make my parents more agreeable to buying preppieish clothes.

But High school football allowed me to be in the "in" crowd and I didn't worry any more about clothes and my collecting was back in full gear, and girlfriends accepted it.

I used to spend quite a bit on RPG games also. D&D and Rolemaster being the favorite.

I did too, but we used to make most of our own D&D dungeons because there just weren't that many pre-made ones to buy. So D&D was never a competing expense for me.

I blew a fair number of quarters on Time Pilot. had those quarters been wisely invested...

and Ms. Field's cookies, when those were new. I guess that was maybe 7th grade and the whole idea of a cookie store where you'd get them hot out of the oven.... must have blown $2-$3 a week on those. what treasures could i have fished out of the 3/$1 bin at my old LCS??

With so many guys saying Porn on here, no wonder

there are Porn Chicks gracing the conventions these days...

Comic Geeks just might be a big percentage of their fan base.

Never been any Porn Chicks at any of the small, local cons that I've gone too...

Age 13: Comics had no competition.

Age 14: First girlfriend. Stopped buying comics cold. (I had my priorities straight. cloud9.gif)

Age 15: Girlfriend and drugs. Dabbled in some Warrens though for a bit.

Age 16: Girlfriend and drugs and a car.

Age 17. Girlfriend and drugs and car and beer.

Later college took over and the drugs and beer faded away.

Didn't buy another comic till at least age 24 or 25.

Speaking of porn.........anyone remember "ON TV" back in the early 80's? I used to play around with the TV antennas for 30 minutes so I could get a semi-clear picture late at night (without sound)

If your interested in old CHICAGO TELEVISION, including ONTV and the porn they showed, go to Old Chicago Television It a great web site that I have helped out. Some of the horror show stuff got there with my help. Anyone remember SHOCK THEATRE or SCREAMIN' YELLOW THEATER?

Cool stuff. thumbsup2.gif

I still remember waiting until midnight so they could post the basketball or baseball scores on "Night Owl". Now we've got ESPN galore.

I was a true comic nerd that spent virtually ALL my money on comics...I had a paper route and mowed lawns so I had a pretty good supply of cash back in my prime collecting years from 1978-1982 (age 13-17). When I got to be a senior in highschool I suddenly discovered that cars and girls cost money too, so I cut WAY back and eventually stopped altogether by the time I was a sophomore in college.

But now I'm back!

As soon as i started driving and got a car, thats where all my money went. Turning your normal SVT Contour into a 450 hp sports sedan. Now that I've finally finished the car for the most part, im starting to get back into collecting high grade silver age F.F.
