I paid $4,000 for them along with many other sets -- 1951 Bowman Spacemen; 1957 Topps Hit Stars; 1950 Hopalong Cassidy; 1953 Topps Who-Z-At; 1949 Pixie X-Ray Round Up; & 1960 Fleer Spins and Needles.

You're right about the ring binder. He probably had them stored in something else for decades. But he did store them right away. I bought his 1950s  Looney Tunes comics a year ago, which were all in great condition.
