Does anyone know what level of magnification CGC uses for grading?  Ie, 5X, 10X

I know for coins it's five times mag.  I wanted to know for grading my own books before sending them in.

Well, I can tell you this - using magnification for grading is probably a mistake.  I use it to help detect monkey business, like color touch, etc., but I don't use it for grade assignment. Even a NM book is going to look way rough using magnification - the printing process of folding paper, cutting it, and ramming staples through it creates a lot of imperfections.

I'm thinking grading should be done with good old 20/20 vision, or vision corrected to 20/20. If you're not using this standard, then your results compared to others will probably be off.

I would be interested to know if anyone uses magnification for assigning a grade.

As far as I know, the only time magnification is used at CGC when grading is for getting a closer look at suspicious areas that may have been restored. Liz is absolutely correct---good old 20/20 vision (or better) is all you really need for grading comic books...

As far as I know, the only time magnification is used at CGC when grading is for getting a closer look at suspicious areas that may have been restored. Liz is absolutely correct---good old 20/20 vision (or better) is all you really need for grading comic books...

Alright sounds good.  Using magnification on the spine can drive you nuts too.

There are times when a jeweler's loupe can be very useful, but it's tough to properly grade a book and look for resto at the same time...
