John E.
Thank you for this. I was wondering myself but didn't know where to start. It'd be great to have a "Highest Paid" list for comic art all the way to Top 100 like they do for Hollywood films. I'm curious to know what art is in the $300k Club, etc. Has anything sold in the $500K range? Where does that DKR splash that Dave Mandel bought fall in this? timguerrero

Rick2you2
I guess the question people are wondering is whether that Secret Wars page represents a market reset, an outlier, or an evolutionary price increase reflected by earlier transactions. Are we headed now into tulip mania territory? And, then there is a question I have raised before. Does it really make sense to treat all sales and price increases as part of one market, as compared to submarkets for material at lower prices points—Morlock territory for example. That, incidentally, is where I come out. Twanj

That Jim Lee cover would surely have a 4 handle now at a minimum, and quite likely a 5 (or higher). It's like dog years now in OA - one year ago nowadays may as well be the equivalent of 7 pre-2020 years. On 1/14/2022 at 8:40 PM, Timely said: Great list. Can I interject that this was the prime era for GI Joe. I would say in 1984 GI Joe was more popular than any other comic characters, Including Spider-Man, X-men, Batman and Superman! Gi Joe had tons of toys, a movie, daily cartoons and lots of other GI Joe related items. There is a ton of nostalgia there. In fact, GI Joe is still so popular the toys are currently in Target, Walmart, TJ Max etc. Twanj, fsumavila and John E.
Day Stripper
How about the Frank Frazetta cover to Weird Science-Fantasy #29 which was sold privately by the Frazetta family to Jim Halperin for $380K in 2010? As per the HA press release (dated 6-8-2010; available on their website), the WSF29 sale price set a "then" new record price for original comic art. The press release also noted that the former record price for OA was the April 2008 private treaty sale (via HA) of Wallace Wood's cover to Weird Science #16 for $200K. The press release also mentions the record auction result for Norman Mingo's painted MAD #30 front and rear covers, sold by HA in November 2008 for $203,150. How quickly times have changed... IMO $400-500K+ is just a realistic assessment of where the market is now on that one 14 months later. I would gladly shell out $312,001 for it right now so that it can beat the G.I. Joe #21 cover on the list. IMO, it's the second most beloved Lee/Williams X-Men cover after the #1 gatefold.
