Netflix’s Marvel series are coming home. Social media has been abuzz this morning about a notification added to the six Defenders universe shows, that they would only be available on Netflix until March 1.

Sources confirm to Deadline that Netflix’s license for Marvel’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, Iron Fist and The Defenders team-up limited series is ending and the rights to the shows is reverting to Disney. The company is keeping mum about its distribution plans for the suite of series; they are expected to be announced the shows’ new streaming home soon.

Made by Disney for Netflix in a different era of the streaming age under a different regime at the now-defunct Marvel Television, the series are not a slam-dunk for flagship Disney+ because of mature content, especially in Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Still, Disney+ feels like the best fit, being the designated Marvel streaming home, and the platform’s recent Marvel series Hawkeye even featured a villain from the Defenders universe, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, as the post-cancellation ban on Disney’s use of characters had expired.

Netflix Warning Says It’s Removing ‘Daredevil,’ ‘Punisher,’ And All Its Marvel Defenders Shows

There are only two main options here, Hulu, which Disney owns, and of course Disney Plus. In recent days, despite Hulu seemingly being the place for more “adult” content, which these shows certainly fall under, Kevin Feige has been talking about the maturity and violence level of Disney Plus’s upcoming Moon Knight show in a way that would imply that D+ may be on the way toward broadening its horizons and expanding beyond PG-13 fare.

This is from an interview with Kevin Feige about Moon Knight:

“He’s brutal. It’s been fun to work with Disney Plus and see the boundaries shifting on what we’re able to do. There are moments [in the series] when Moon Knight is wailing on another character, and it is loud and brutal, and the knee-jerk reaction is, ‘We’re gonna pull back on this, right?’ No. We’re not pulling back. There’s a tonal shift. This is a different thing. This is Moon Knight.”

If that’s the case, then Disney would be able to keep all its Marvel shows together, and it would make sense that say, Daredevil seasons 1-3 would be on Disney Plus right next to Hawkeye season 1, when both series share Kingpin.

The assumption was definitely Hulu. But once Kevin Feige started talking about how hardcore Moon Knight is, anything is fair game now. Other than Punisher.

Happy the shows are returning to Disney and do hope they are just available on Disney+. Hoping Moon Knight does well and there aren't too many complaints about the bloodiness or dark tone of the show.

Would love for there to be more crossovers of the characters in future tv series.

It would be fantastic to finally see this reality where all the characters are flowing in and out of shows together.

What will be interesting is if they do / do not edit them for content .

I hate that s^&*.

As an example, Comedy Central censoring parts of The Office is mind-blowing stupidity.

I truly could not agree more!

All six of Marvel’s original seres for Netflix, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher, and The Defenders limited series as well as Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which had been streaming exclusively on Netflix, will be moving to Disney+ starting March 16. They will be available across all other Disney+ markets later this year.

The arrival of the Defenders franchise, whose series are all rated TV-MA, is ushering in a new era for Disney+ in the U.S., which launched as a family friendly destination with all of its programming fitting into the TV-Y, TVY-7, TV-G, TV-PG and TV-14 ratings categories.

To accomodate the introduction of TV-MA programming (equivalent to an R-rating in features), Disney+ will be updating its existing Parental Controls in the U.S. This already has been implemented internationally, including in EMEA, where Star, which features adult programming from Hulu, FX and other Disney entities, is integrated into Disney+.

The Parents Television Council (PTC) is speaking out against Disney ahead of the March 16 addition of former Netflix-Marvel series “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist,” “The Punisher” and “The Defenders” on Disney Plus. All of these series are significantly more violent and adult in theme and subject matter compared to the other offerings in the Disney Plus library. The PTC warned Disney that streaming these series would “destroy your brand.”

“For more than 98 years, the Walt Disney Company has been synonymous with the words Family Friendly, and I can think of no other corporation in American history that has been built more squarely on the backs – and on the wallets – of parents and families,” Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television and Media Council, said in a statement. “The company’s eponymous platform Disney Plus logically marketed itself as a family-friendly streaming service, and parents have placed their trust in Disney to deliver just that.”
