That stain on the back cover was pretty bad. To me removing it is restoration but that's just me. Beautiful book but 9.4? I think not.

2019 auction - https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/superhero/captain-america-comics-1-san-francisco-pedigree-timely-1941-cgc-nm-94-off-white-to-white-pages/a/7211-91053.s

the idea that heritage auctions and CGC might somehow conspire to remove a stain on the back of a major, six figure book without it receiving the appropriate conserved or restored label is (insert adjective here). some examples of possible adjectives include 'likely,' 'reasonable,' 'obvious,' 'offensive,' 'scandalous,' etc.

Not sure where you're coming from on this.

Depending on what the stain was comprised of it is possible it came off cleanly without chemicals etc…not sure how likely it is, or what kind of stain it was, but I have taken a fine toothbrush to similar brownish gunky stains on books and been amazed to see it scrape right off without any trace it was ever there.

Yes, based upon how the grading process is supposed to work, the graders are supposed to grade the book that's in front of them at the time as it crosses their grading table and not try to figure out the history of the book.  (thumbsu

Now, as for whether it should have been encased with a blue label which it was or possibly a green or purple label, I guess that really depends if a chemical treatment was used to removed the stain or not, and if so, were the CGC graders able to catch it.  hm  (shrug)

This all kinda stinks to a lifetime pursuer of comic books.

The whole idea of the hobby is to find the best copy as it sits where you find it etc.....

All this manipulation of reality ruins the fun of the search and the find itself. The item is not real. It is fiction.

We have a local dealer here who brags about marrying pages into bronze keys and getting blue labels out of them then selling them to his customers.

This all stinks. In a court of law a cgc item would be thrown out due to not being able to validate the integrity of it.

The book is not a 9.4.................. It may not have been when printed etc.......

Has zero to do with the actual hobby of collecting and enjoying comic books.

Opinion from Doctor Doom

Please chime in..........

A local dealer here tells a story about when he found a cap one in a barstool once that was used as padding when they recovered the stool in forties.

Fun Story
