Super heroes weren't completely dead!

You may be asking yourself... where's John Buscema? Didn't he work for 50's Atlas? Well he'd left after the first Stan debacle (over inventory), but still did an occasional freelance for them. And then there's this from Charlton...

Journey Into Unknown Worlds #4 - Carl Burgos cover

Ditko had two stories for the month of January, the first with writer Carl Wessler (who probably did twice as many stories for Atlas as he's credited for) in Journey Into Unknown Worlds #4 (the lead story!). For some reason this story appears in 2019's Marvel Masters of Suspense: Stan Lee & Steve Ditko #1, when clearly Stan didn't write the story.

It's also strange that Atlas/Marvel would continue to make their 'weird tales' type of books LOOK almost the same as they did pre-code... they're NOT - if you look closely you can see they're clearly toned down - but the overall aesthetic remains the same... which is interesting as DC was succeeding with their sanitized approach... I'm not knocking it - I PREFER it - but, just sayin'...

Mystery Tales #40 - Carl Burgos cover

Also in 2019's Marvel Masters of Suspense: Stan Lee & Steve Ditko #1, is Ditko's other story from January 1956 (the last story in the comic...), appearing in Mystery Tales #40. Not sure who the writer is, but 99% sure its not Stan Lee as he didn't sign it - and by this point he signed anything he touched including Paper Doll pages and even a cover here and there. Personally I like most of Ditko's Charlton work better than either of these stories, but I'm glad to see he was getting some work!

Young Brides #28 - Jack Kirby had one comic for the month of January, but it was the entire comic - written and drawn by Jack, with inking assists from Joe Simon on a few stories, and (possibly) Marvin Stein on others, though in some instances Kirby inks his own work.

Story One

Last page includes Statement of Ownership.
