ON NEWSSTANDS FEBRUARY 1956

The following month, we have Young Love #71 - (Jack Kirby cover, Joe Simon inks) - We'll look at the Kirby story in this issue next, but the first story in this issue is from artist Bill Draut, who I wanted to highlight. Draut was a quality artist for Simon & Kirby's studio and shortly after this would move to DC, where he'd work on (mostly) their line of romance comics, into the mid-70's.

Young Romance #83 - is an all Kirby issue, writing, penciling and inking (though he does get an ink assist here and there) and the characters on the screen on the front cover are probably drawn by Joe Simon....

Strange Tales #46 - (Carl Burgos cover) - Steve Ditko only has one story for the month and it's in Strange Tales #46, the last story in the book. But it's a good one!

This is another story that appears in 2019's Marvel Masters of Suspense: Stan Lee & Steve Ditko #1 Omnibus, when clearly Stan didn't write the story.

Atlas/Marvel would try to add a couple of 'weird tales' comics to their line-up, dabbling with sci-fi -a genre Goodman hated. One that lasted a few issues after the implosion was World of Fantasy. Issue #1, released this month featured a cover by John Severin (again, immediately becoming the 'other' artist Stan would consistently use for 1st issue covers), with a lead story by Werner Roth - giving an example of the type of work done here...

Gunsmoke Western #35 - (John Severin cover) - Stan preferred to write multiple stories for the titles like Gunsmoke Western, where he didn't have to use a character and he could just keep it simple. In books like Kid Colt Outlaw or the Ringo Kid, he always did the 'filler' story - the non feature character story (usually third or fourth - in the book.

Story ONE with Jerry Robinson

Western Kid #10 - (Joe Maneely cover) - Here the typical example. Starts off with a 5 page John Romita Western Kid story, a 2 page text story, a 4 page John Romita Western Kid story, a 5 page John Romita Western Kid story, Stan's Western 'filler', and then a finale 5 page John Romita Western Kid story. Most of the Westerns anthology's had a rotation of artists to do stories, but of the 'character' westerns had a regular artist and writer who handled most of the lead characters stories. John Romita was the western Kid artist!

ON NEWSSTANDS FEBRUARY 1956

Matt Slade, Gunfighter #1 - (Joe Maneely cover) - Joe Maneely would introduce another title, with cover and interior art (and story?). Maneely only did the first issue, and it only last 4... before becoming Kid Slade, Gunfighter and going 4 more issues.

I guess what Stan was doing, was putting Joe Maneely on a book to start, maybe doing a few more covers, while using a cheaper artist on the interiors. We see this a number of times throughout this time. I can't think of any where it worked and the book lasted...
