I came close.... but the seller didn’t want to take a $2,000 haircut. And I just didn’t want to give in. Very disappointed. 
I did list 70-80 comics with an auction house not HA and submitted 1 MTG-OA item to HA September Signature Auction # 7289.

Yep,  he ran back to Albert as fast as his feet carried him. Lucky it was purchased from Albert as there were at least 4 Art Dealers present at the 2021 NYCC who would not have issued a refund - plus some bro's who would have insisted (LIED) it was a 1985  "alternate variant cover" or some such hogwash rather than a 2016 commission.

Artistically speaking I agree, but I think #4 is the most visually striking. Does the art for that cover exist?

In all fairness to Mr. Moy, I thought the price reasonable enough to pay it. And I certainly wouldn't sell it for that now. He has some wonderful stuff.

I don't know if the OA for the cover of Foxhole #4 still exists. I am not as enthusiastic as you. I feel much of the appeal is due to the coloring of the published cover, which of course would be lacking in the OA. I much prefer the unused #4 cover, the first Foxhole cover submitted to the Comic Code. It was rejected and hence the published version. Of course my preference may be biased, it is hanging on my living room wall.

So, I noticed at SDCC 2019 (the last show pre-pandemic) that it was not well-attended by vintage OA collectors, which I attributed to (1) the increasing cost/hassle/difficulty of securing tickets & hotels at SDCC; (2) the increase in competing shows, including those that are more OA-focused; (3) the collector/dealer base getting older - if you look at all the OA-related social media pics from this year's show, you'd think this was No Hobby For Young Men. :eek: 

Fast forward to 2022 and I think it was largely the same. Among my circle of OA friends, I think there was some pent-up demand for the show (the 1st in 3 years) so people made the effort to make it out to SDCC. That said, it did have the feel of a "last hurrah" - I wonder if that many of my circle will ever be all together at SDCC ever again. And I kept hearing over and over from people that many people they know stayed home this year, even despite the pent-up demand, while several questioned whether they would be back next year.

My impression was that sales were OK through Friday and maybe they became more than OK as I saw Jim Halperin making the rounds before I left scooping up armloads of art (not sure how much was for his collection vs. Heritage consignments) - he may have single-handedly made the show for some dealers. I didn't see any blockbuster fresh-to-market pieces at the show - the consensus is that all that stuff is going to auction these days. Foot traffic was poor, and a number of people openly questioned how much longer vintage OA will be significant presence at SDCC. As people know, Mitch pulled out of this show (for good), and the impression that I got was that dealers have been doing so well through online sales and smaller shows that they don't really need SDCC anymore. I wonder if, 10 years from now, more of the space currently devoted to OA will be taken over by toys, videogames, etc. :( 

I saw & heard of a number of medium-sized deals done - multiple BWS Conan pages, a Mac Raboy cover, a couple of war-themed GA covers (including the Foxhole that Richard got), a couple of other cool Kirby pieces, a Gil Elvgren pin-up, some EC & GA panel pages, a great Dave Sim Cerebus specialty piece, etc. I had a great show and picked up 12 published pieces, all in the 3 and low-to-mid 4 figure range. Not going to name specifics (don't want the competition!), but, if you look hard enough, there are still fun & nostalgic pieces that can be had in that price range and perhaps even some future classics if you look at some of the more modern (post-2000) offerings.
