Newbie Quesion About Grading/Cover Tear

6 posts in this topic

Hello, this is my first post.  I recently purchased a 9.8 Thor 337 signed comic book from 1983. Upon closer inspection, I noticed a small tear in the upper right of the cover. I have been watching videos online about negligible defects, and from what I understand, these defects are acceptable if they are under 1/16 of an inch.

I am debating returning this item because it is a bit bothersome as it looks like the corner is about to fall off.  I also wanted to have CGC perform a re-holder service because the grade is from 2015, and I read you should have the books re-holdered to replace the microchamber paper.  I am afraid when I send it in, CGC will return it with a lower grade because of the defect.

Should I return this book to the seller?

Based on the info you provided, I would not return it.

I view returns as your recourse when you receive an item that was not as promised.  You bought a book that has CGC’s opinion of a grade, and you got exactly that book.  If the book had problems that occurred post-grading (shaken comic syndrome, cracked case) and those problems were not disclosed by the seller, you would have a reasonable case for returning.

Grading is subjective. Graders at CGC determined this to be a 9.8.  If you are interested in buying only books for which your opinion of the grade matches CGC’s opinion of the grade, then you should ask for enough photos ahead of time that you can make that evaluation before you buy.  Otherwise, be prepared to be disappointed because your opinion of the grade will never match CGC’s opinion of the grade 100% of the time.

Hi, great comic, congrats; Soti made good points as always.

My view: don't return it for the reason you stated. The slab doesn't say 9.9 and that's because CGC saw a defect that makes the comic a 9.8. Even if the book is torn in half, the slab still says 9.8. Rest assured that if the corner ever falls off, the number on your slab will still say 9.8. 😉

Third-party grading commoditizes the underlying. If the slab says 9.8, then you're transacting with a 9.8. The rest is up to you.

I strongly advise against reholdering a comic with a grade you like, especially a 9.8 or above. Reholdering means that the book is sliced out of the inner sleeve and sealed into a new inner sleeve. That means the book will be frighteningly close to a sharp object and manually removed. I don't think anyone should play that game. Good luck!

CGC calls this tear on Wolverine Limited 1 a common binary defect of this particular book and guaranteed the 9.8. Only one of my 65 copies with this defect, but hey, who's gonna win an argument with CGC.
