The spine edge on the back cover looks a little rough. Is something going on there, or is that an illusion? I see some light to moderate creasing around the spine that might look better with pressing. There are people with actual experience pressing GA-era comics that I would defer to though. This books really looks great for being almost 70 years old. If there's a GA-bump, I could see this going 8.5±0.5, but my feel for what CGC feels are acceptable defects on these are vague, at best. If I was way off in either direction, I would not be surprised.

2"-3" Spine Split at top, slight spine roll, slight edge/corner wear w/color rub, minor to moderate spine stress w/several color breaking spine ticks, discolored staples.

It is the spine split that is hurting this grade, a spine split that long is only allowed in GD 2.0/GD+ 2.5, again we are back to how much of a hit does a book that may have been in the FN/VF 7.0 range take, unfortunately none of us have access to CGC's grading standards and there is no list of how much a certain defect drops a books grade on an otherwise higher grade copy, there are lots of gray areas in grading and lots of different interpretations of some grading terms.

IMO...

5.5 FINE- (FN-):  Back to Top
Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.

5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN):  Back to Top
An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.

Thanks so much -- much appreciated! Hopefully CGC will show me mercy lol

Get us a picture from the spine side.  The back cover picture makes it look like something is happening with the center of the spine, and the interior splash photo makes it look like the whole top of the spine is split.

Nice Captain Marvel cover swipe.  That's a great lookin book.  NO PRESS.  2c

This is a hard one. It should be a 2.0 because of the spine split. CGC will give a book with a completely detached cover and spine split a 1.5 (best case scenario).

That book probably ought to be a 0.5 so CGC is showing some leniency to the defect.

This book would be an 8.0 IMO if not for the spine split. You have to take it's overall appearance in mind despite that very significant flaw.

Here's a book with a 1" spine split at the top and a 3.75" one at the bottom. So take note though of what issue it is. If there's ever to be a key bump....

Here's one with a 2" spine split at the bottom -

My guess is that your book would get a 3.5.

It's only a guess though. I wonder what others might say.

I didn't notice that was a spine split. That knocks you down quite a bit unfortunately.

Not that you have a choice but hopefully it is not graded on a Monday or Friday and the grader is having a good week.

I know :(

To be perfectly honest, I'd be a bit nervous about sending this book in for grading. If you do, make sure you pack it extremely well and put a FRAGILE sticker on the package and on the bag the comic is in. Even then, you're taking a chance on making that spine split even more pronounced than it already is. Whatever you do, good luck and thanks for posting it!

And at this point, my best guess is that it may land somewhere in the 3.0 - 3.5 range...

Max grade with that split is 3.0.  But it really is a lovely copy.  Enjoy it the way it is.

Thanks so much, guys :x
