This is how we are going to do it.  I have 2 books.  We will have a tiebreaker round with those books.   Electron and The General will be competing to determine which one will get 1st and 2nd place.  

comicginger1789 and Old Fashion PB & J will be competing for 3rd place.  If there is still a tie after the 2 book round, this will be used to determine the winners.

Final Rankings are determined by the following criteria:

1) Most Cumulative Bullseyes

2) Most Books off by 1 grade

3) Most Books off by 2 grades

4) First Book in order listed to get Bullseye

5) Second Book in order listed to get Bullseye

I will post this tiebreaker round about 8:00 PM Eastern time Tonight.

So after these 3 contests of 4 rounds each it appears that to be in contention for the top 3 spots, we will have to sharpen our skills and average less than 5 points per round. Quite the challenge but I like it! I only managed to hit 5 or less 2 out of the 4 rounds. So yep, I need to sharpen my skills.

Collectively, Board members were somewhat more critical than CGC on the Round 4 books.  In terms of bulls-eyes, the Board returned to Round 1 / Round 2 form (with 122 total, or 25% of the grades submitted).  Here are a few other notable observations based on the data reported above:

• Book #16 (Underworld #3):  An "average" book for the Board as a whole, with 26% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 59% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was almost one grade increment more critical than CGC (4.1 vs 4.5).  It's reassuring to see that CGC still regards moderate-to-heavy back cover soiling as a blemish/flaw worthy of a grade deduction. 
• Book #17 (Adventure Comics #256):  Another "average" book for the Board as a whole, with 26% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 45% within one grade increment of CGC.  Collectively, the Board was once again one grade increment more critical than CGC (6.5 vs 7.0).   Although it wasn't specifically called out in the Grader Notes, the cover appears to be partially detached at the top staple (link).  CGC's grade of 7.0 sure seems like a gift, considering there's also foxing (?) stains along the top edge of the back cover and a full-thickness moisture stain at the unbound bottom corner. 
• Book #18 (Amazing Spider-Man #54):  By far, the "toughest" book for the Board as a whole, with only 11% ( ) of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 58% within one grade increment of CGC.  However, the Board was just slightly more critical than CGC (8.9 vs 9.0).    I think the key to nailing this one was deciding how much to deduct for that "9817" pencil marking (which doesn't look like any arrival date I've ever seen) below Spidey's left foot.
• Book #19 (Iron Man #55):  The "co-easiest" book for the Board as a whole, with 33% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 60% within one grade increment of CGC.  Once again, the Board was just slightly more critical than CGC (7.4 vs 7.5). 
• Book #20 (New Mutants #98):  The other "co-easiest" book for the Board as a whole, with 34% of the contestants at the same grade as CGC and 75% within one grade increment of CGC.  This time around, the Board was one grade increment more critical than CGC (9.4 vs 9.6).    Selecting a post-1990 Modern as Book #20 is a sure-fire way to end the contest on a positive note.  Hey, not every golf course has a challenging 18th hole.

I've posted this before, but I think it's worthwhile to share it again.

Back in the mid-2000s, Ed Jaster (who had recently joined Heritage Auctions) told me the "trick" to having your books certified by CGC was to max out your invoices rather than submit only a few books.  "Sometimes you'll be higher than CGC, and sometimes you'll be lower; but if you're a decent grader, your average grade should come pretty close to CGC's."

CGC's proprietary (and still unpublished) grading rubric necessarily allows for judgment, and different graders may interpret/apply a given standard differently.  Blemishes/defects can be overlooked or discounted for any number of reasons.  The bottom line is that a given book may not always receive the same CGC grade if it's submitted several times (although the various grades assigned will almost certainly be within an increment or two of each other).  This fact (not opinion) will be obvious to anyone who's done an initial prescreen and then had the rejected books accepted on a later, identical, prescreen.  This is not meant to be a slam against CGC; I know of no collector who can/will assign the exact same grade to every one of his/her books every time he/she looks at 'em.

So, just for kicks, recalculate your total Contest #3 score using "signed deltas": -2 for your guess being 2 grade increments too low, -1 for your guess being 1 grade increment too low, 0 for a bullseye, +1 for your guess being 1 grade increment too high, +2 for your guess being 2 grade increments too high, and so on.  What's your cumulative 20-book tally now?  Did the errors to the low side and high side more or less balance out?  Or is your tally way negative or way positive (in which case you're consistently being too strict or too lenient with your condition assessments)?

Chances are your score using signed deltas will be much smaller than your score using absolute/unsigned deltas.  If that's the case, your errors are balancing out (which is exactly what Ed predicted would happen for a decent grader).  Here's an example using my own Round 1+2+3+4 guesses (20 books):

• 5 Bullseyes = 0
• 3 times my guess was one grade increment too low = -3
• 7 times my guess was one grade increment too high = +7
• 3 times my guess was two grade increments too low = -6
• 2 times my guess was two grade increments too high = +4

My total signed delta score would be 0 - 3 + 7 - 6 + 4 = +2 for the 20-book challenge.  That's an average error of one-tenth of one grade increment (0.1).    Compare that to my total absolute/unsigned delta score (my actual contest score) of 20, or an average error of one grade increment per book.  This is exactly what Ed Jaster predicted would happen for a person whose grading standards are essentially in line with CGC's.

With a 3rd place finish last time (my first contest) and tied for 5th this time, I might start to think I actually know how to grade, ha ha.
