Final Grades for Fall Grading Contest
3 3

44 posts in this topic

Looking over the final grade distribution chart I found the following.

Captain Midnight #43 was the easiest to grade with 12 contestants nailing the correct grade.

Detective Comics #279 posed the most difficult challenge with only 3 contestants coming up with the right grade.

All books except for World of  Fantasy #17 & Captain Midnight #43  had more guesses below the actual grade received than above. For those two books, there was an equal number of grades above and below the actual grade.

Before starting the contest I wondered if it might be too easy, given that all but one book had grades in the range of 5 to 6.5

Thanks to all who participated, it made this contest a very enjoyable experience. (thumbsu

I thought the books were all challenging being in such a tight range. It made me second and third guess all 3 rounds of books. I found myself comparing each book with the others in the round and then going back to compare against previous round books. I assumed you submitted these books in the same batch and felt that the grading would be consistent with the graders from this period..does that make sense? How did you all approach grading?

For the past few years I have maintained an Xcel sheet of books that may be candidates for submitting to CGC. Below is a portion of that chart for just the 8 books in the contest, with my grade estimates and the actual grades received. The most pleasant surprise was the grade received by Detective Comics #189 & it was an LCS find.

flash book crushed me thought it would get a GA bump. Great contest.

I totally wanted to give it a 5.0 especially being a Flash fan and all. But that chew or damage to the bottom left, the inch long staple tear and the eraser taken to the logo!?  :pullhair: All of that pushed me to a 4.5. Notes taken, recalibrating, CGC is really redefining the "Fine" category for me. In the old days, before the grading guides Fine was a much finer category :roflmao:. And I think all those many years of grading that way are just hardwired into me. I have got to rewire. And its nice to know that books from that era can be considered Fine even with some pretty significant defects. I like it but its just tough to fight old habits and requires constant calibration. That is why I am so passionate about these contests. Does anyone else out there remember when Fine was more like todays VF/NM?:preach:

Thanks @frozentundraguy and @flashlites for running this. :applause:

I learn something new every time I participate in these. I was way to harsh on Flash #81. With that erasure note and the BLFC issue I kept the grade at a 4. Really tough book to grade!

I recall when fine really was fine. I picked up this book at a con back in the early 2000's. It was graded as fine by the seller.

This would probably grade a 7.0 maybe 7.5? Certainly higher than a 6.0(Fine) by todays standards.@grendelbo, @Batman Fett @frozentundraguy, @Funnybooks and anyone else who wants to take a stab at it. Just for fun and calibration :bump:

Without seeing the back cover, I would grade it a 7.0 at best.
