I just received a Silver Age book that doean't have staples and also no holes. With a press & clean it would look great as it only has some ncb bends and a mildly rough top edge. How does not having staples affect the grade? I'm assuming a green label for mfg. error.Could it have period staples added without being considered restored? Would that make any difference???

Comic in question is Go-Go #9.Yeah,a Charlton,I know but it's an obsession of mine & none on the census.I did get it fairly cheap :p

Most likely a green label but a request could get a blue universal with the “manufactured without staples” annotation. A purple label with “staples replaced or added” would be likely if you tried even if you managed to add a pair from the same era. Only going by what I’ve seen noted on similar books but it’s possible other members may have had different experiences. As the owner of a few of those types of books myself, I’d also be interested in learning a bit more on the subject

I also have an Abbott & Costello #1 Charlton but the staples have been removed and a Crown Comics GA book with no staples but I can't remember if it had holes or not without looking.

Why would anyone remove the staples anyway ?

As long as the condition grade is higher than 4.0, the book would be awarded a Qualified Grade and encapsulated with a Green Label.  The label notes would read "MANUFACTURED WITHOUT STAPLES" (in caps).  Here are a few examples:

I should add that I've never seen a book with this defect (1) awarded a Universal Grade or (2) awarded a Qualified Grade less than 5.5 -- which is not to say such examples don't exist, only that I've never seen 'em.  I hope this helps.  :foryou:

I would avoid adding staples.

Maybe there are some examples to prove me wrong, but my guess is that it would be a 7.0 at-best if you were to request and receive a Universal label. With a Qualified label, possibly all the way up to 9.8 (though that doesn't seem likely with your description).

That blows me away that they are given green labels, since the books were manufactured that way. Seems like an exception that is really silly, to me, anyways.
