If You Could Own Only One Comic Series from each Decade with a caveat...
1 1

25 posts in this topic

The caveat being you only can own the comics from that series in that decade. So you would be able to own all the issues that ran from Jan 1st of the start of the decade to Dec 31st of the end of the decade (ex. Jan 1st 1950- Dec 31st 1959)

My series would be:

30s  Action Comics 1-19

40s Batman 1-56

50s Showcase 1-23

60s ASM 1-79

70s Tomb of Dracula 1-70

80s TMNT 1-27

90s Spawn 1-90

00s The Walking Dead 1-80

What's your picks?

Interesting topic! (thumbsu

That's a pretty darn good list, with a fairly good spread of genres.

I would probably swap out 50's Showcase for some 50's horror like maybe Tales From the Crypt 20-50, or Vault of Horror 12-40. Something in that genre.

Not sure if I would keep 70's TOD, but I'm also not sure what I'd swap out for it too.

I like this! I think some of your numbering might be off, TMNT #28 was published in 1990 for example. Here are mine:

30s  Detective Comics 1-33

40s Batman 1-56

50s Batman 57-128

60s ASM 1-81

70s ASM 82-201

80s TMNT 1-27

90s Batman

00s Batman

You're right. I was in the middle of editing it when you posted. I was going off memory, thinking there was no way they only published 27 issues in 6 years. But 🤷‍♂️

30s  Detective comics

40s  Marvel mystery

50s weird fantasy (EC) - this was the hardest.  Only 22 issues, but I really wanted a Sci-Fi title. Love these covers and feel like EC should be represented.

60s Fantastic Four

70s House of Secrets

80s Saga of Swampthing

90s Xmen

00s Batman

What's funny is,  I strongly considered ASM for every decade from 1960 on and didn't pick ASM for any.

So I think ASM was the most consistent decade after decade.

40s Eisner’s Spirit or Cole’s Plastic Man

50s Weird Science

60s Fantastic Four

70s Claremont / Byrne X-Men

80s Love and Rockets

90s Hellboy or Starman (James Robinson version)

00s Captain America by Brubaker

That’d do.

I was thinking X-Men too but not having the Wolverine vs Hellfire and The Dark Phoenix Saga in my collection was a deal breaker. Not to mention missing out on the first appearance of Dazzler.😁

My collection has pretty much already voted on this!

30s Detective Comics 1-33 (aspirational!)

40s WDC&S 1-99 (I'm only three short of having these)

50s Weird Science/Fantasy (I have all of these)

60s JIM/Thor 56-171 (I have all the Thors and most JIM > 100)

70s ASM (I have very few 1970s comics, but I have some of these)

80s Cerebus 14-129 (had all of these, still have the trades - I don't want the later arcs!); Honourable mention: Moore's Swamp Thing

90s Bone 1 -37 (have these in TPB)

00s Fables 1 - 99 (have these in TPB)

JIM/Thor would only be until 171 for the decade rule. No Exceptions. But a cool run you have nonetheless.

Thanks - fixed. I can live without 172-183, the quality was slipping by then anyway.

30s- Detective

40s- Batman

50s- Tales from the Crypt

60s- Amazing Spider-Man

70s- Batman(O'Neill/Adams, 100 pagers)

80s- ASM

I stopped reading modern comics in the Nineties, so I have no opinion on comics from the last few decades.

Same problem with Miller’s Daredevil.

Crosses the 70s - 80s division.

A fairly close call, though.

Either that or Weird Science. Pretty much on par, quality-wise.

I have a fondness for Weird Science as it was the first EC comic I ever read, in the Library format, and was absolutely blown away by it. Simply top-level, all-time classic science-fiction comics, both titles.
