As I understand it, CGC grades inserts differently based upon if they are actually bound into the book rather than just included with it. Examples being: ASM 238 the tattoo is bound to one staple so if it is removed the book gets a qualified grade. Early Valiant (Magnus or Harbinger) the coupons were stapled into the books, so when removed, we get a qualified grade. In the above examples the inserts are not part of the actual comic but they are are bound into the product with a staple (or two). On the other hand we have a glut of '90's fun that came polybagged with the comics where our bonus material is loose. Superman 75, we are told to remove it from the bag and not send the card/poster/armband in as they will just be discarded (please correct me if I'm wrong here). Same goes for X-Force 1 and its various cards and a thousand other books. That brings me to my question. Over in the comics magazine thread, we have had a brief discussion about 2000A.D. #2. A very important book as it contains the first appearance of Judge Dredd. This issue was distributed with a sheet of Biotronic stickers. By all accounts these stickers were just inserted into the issue but not bound in any way, so in simple terms, loose. If anyone has info other than this please let me know. I've never seen a copy with a bound set of stickers (and I own the stickers that show no signs of having been removed from the book) but data on this book is surprisingly scarce for such a key issue. So far, and we are very early into the grading cycle on this book so there is a chance to get this right, CGC has graded only 20 copies, 14 universal (I'm assuming these all have the stickers) and 6 qualified (again assuming missing the stickers). Obviously this is pre polybag era, but we can assume from the above data that had it come in a polybag (which in reality only makes it easier to keep the stickers with the book) it wouldn't need them to be considered whole and therefore universal. Are there other examples of books missing loose inserts creating a qualified label? Hopefully that all makes sense and we can find a consensus before this book grows into the monster it deserves to be and it's too late to fix what I believe to be a mistake by CGC in the handling of this very key issue. Someone on here has posted a thread on 'Highest graded copy of 2000AD issue 2' which I believe was their own copy, but I can't recall which sub forum it's in. They are bound to make reference to the stickers and whether they were entombed with the book or returned loose, and if not you could pm them. Good luck and please, share your findings here! PINWHEEL Posted February 25, 2023 Author Share Posted February 25, 2023 I guess the real question is why do "loose" inserts in a poly bagged comic not need to be present when graded while these "loose" inserts in a magazine do? Looks like the glasses were never bound into the book in the first place? Then it's a loose item, no slabby. But then why are copies qualified just for not having the loose item?
