Are Comic Books 'Collectables' ? - or are they JUST Comic Books ?

90 posts in this topic

So what category do comics (let's use GA as an example) fall under?

They are simply comic books. No General Heading.

OA also falls into the category of 'Art' - some would say,...'fine art'.

Interesting point.

Unfortunately, it's similar to the delusion that porn stars have thinking they are in the movie business.

Comic book art may never be of any interest to anyone outside the hobby. And given it's current prices, of little interest to many people inside the hobby.

Geeze you have a way with communication.

You were referring to the set of OA collector's,...

just read what you wrote.

Comics are collectables just like sports cards, coins, stamps, posters,Hummels,Pez dispensers,Art(OA included),antiques, record albums, and anything else you can save.Thimbles are collectables, and I'm sure there are more than one of them.I really don't understand your logic,KK,do you really think by starting an OA topic every 3 hours it's going to make me sell my house so I can buy your OA?You need to realize not everyone is loaded like you are,and can't afford to drop 15k on a Ditko ASM page. Now I will give you credit for opening my eyes to the OA market, and I have been looking at some cheap pieces on Ebay, but in my eyes,OA is a niche market. The people with the nicest OA keep it forever,or trade it to other OA collecters behind the scenes. At least if I want an AF #15,I know I can get it..........what if I wanted the OA to ASM #28?(or your Captain America #1 cover?)I'd rather get eaten alive by wild badgers than have to haggle with you over a price. And for someone who promotes OA so much on these boards, you refuse to show us 1 piece that you own.Did you ever think that maybe if we saw some of the great pieces you have(?),we might become more interested in OA?Or maybe you just want to use them to decorate your coffin when you croak........

to expand on what I was saying:

collectible:

An asset of limited supply that is sought for a variety of reasons including, it is hoped, an increase in value. Stamps, antiques, coins, and works of art are among the many things usually classified as collectibles. Collectibles are often regarded by investors as hedges against inflation, since their value tends to appreciate most when general prices are rising. The collectibles market represents a very tricky investment for inexperienced investors.

So while certain comic books and OA may fall under this definition, certainly you cannot make the assumption that all comic books and OA fall under this definition.

Again with the name calling. I know what I said.

How many comic collectors also collect comic art? I'm guessing about 1% considering how expensive it is. That, to me, would indicate that comic collectors (as a group) have "little interest" in collecting comic art.

Thank you for the textbook definition. I was thinking of posting one as well.

It does depend on the comic. Some are reading material, and some are collectibles.

I think that is the point is that as a broad definition you can't label comic books as a collectible, especially when you consider the amount of books published after 1985.

Remembering that we are not taking grade into account here, just the actual issues. Is a Good copy of All Star Western #10 a collectible?

Comic Book Art and its Collector's are 'The Subject' of your sentence. Where do you get comic book collector's from. Please learn to write clearer.

And yet another post that proves why bracing KK in an argument is as futile as hating graemlins. He posts a thread with the intent of spirited discussion, which ends in name calling. Usually, KK's response to losing the argument.

How many comics are there that were published before 1970 versus published after 1970? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Why are people even bothering to engage in this useless semantical debate? What difference does it make if comics are defined as a "collectible"? What would it change? Who cares? screwy.gif

Bingo. As I said at the top of the thread, it was all just a worthless red herring.

Why people feel it necessary to engage in any kind of dialogue with KK when they could simply go out and bang their head against the wall is beyond me. 27_laughing.gif

I'm just fighting the good fight. I got him to admit that the "OA market is very small". That's sigline quote material right there. laugh.gif

This dialogue had a purpose.

You guys just hate me to much to listen.

An Old Chinese adage,....."The hardest thing to open is a closed mind".

KK

For the last time, KK, NONE of us hate you. Really.

That would mean that we care, when we don't. smirk.gif

We might even find you less irritating and pompous if you actually indulged in debate instead of endless gainsaying, 'cause it does seem that you either don't know how to argue or don't want to.

You have to admit, virtually every thread you've ever started has involved two simple subtexts, regardless of your spin:-

1) Original Art is more important than comics, yes it is, yes it is, yes it is!!!

2) PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!! ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME!!!!! You guys are sucky and inferior!!! I belittle your line of reasoning!!! You don't collect OA, and I do!! I am GREAT!!!
