The plot thickens! And possibly freezes! Part One is due in cinemas on 14 July this year, while we'll have to wait until 28 June 2024 for Part Two.

When it comes to the modern Mission: Impossible movies, you can forget the big Hollywood trade magazines. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie is your main source for casting news. And he's put out the latest update, with word that actor Rolf Saxon is aboard the still-filming eighth entry Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2.

Saxon is a throwback to the original 1996 M:I movie, as he played CIA Analyst William Donloe, the who was supposed to be watching highly classified documents before Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt drops from the ceiling and steals them in one of the most iconic moments of that outing.

Donloe's punishment for his failure? Reassignment to a chilly substation in Alaska.

It marks the latest in connective tissue to the first film, since we already know that Henry Czerny is back as Eugene Kittridge, who suspects Hunt is a mole. From the looks of the initial Dead Reckoning Part One trailer, Kittridge will be even more of a problem this time.

Following completion of Part One, the production immediately set off for South Africa and the Arctic (yes, the actual Arctic) to get the follow-up underway. "Tom and I are always trying to get the big mess out of the way first," director Christopher McQuarrie explains to Empire, in our world-exclusive new issue. “South Africa was intense. The aerial sequence is…” He pauses. “It’s just outrageous. The thing to remember as you’re watching this monster [aka. Part One] is that another monster waits behind it.” If those monsters are the incredible feats of cinematic spectacle that we’re hoping they are, then they’re definitely not the kind to be afraid of.

With regards to that aforementioned aerial sequence, it seems baffling to think that Tom Cruise could possibly compete with the crazy plane antics he displayed in last year’s Top Gun: Maverick – but, Cruise tells us, for him, the mantra is always "We can do better." The star whispers it to McQuarrie after every Mission debut screening, and, Cruise says, "He knows it’s true. Since I was a young actor, people go, ‘Well, what do you do next?’ There’s always another mountain to climb. Always.”

Lake George co-stars Carrie Coon and Shea Whigham are actors’ actors. They’re highly regarded by their peers, and they elevate every project they’re a part of, whether it’s an indie, a blockbuster or a prestigious cable series. And as soon as the audience sees them on the big or small screen, they immediately know they’re in good hands with the two reliable actors. The duo first worked together on season three of Noah Hawley’s Emmy-nominated Fargo series, and they spent six years trying to reunite until the SAG strike in the summer of 2023 presented a unique opportunity to do just that by way of an interim agreement.

As far as what’s next for the two in-demand actors, Coon is headed back to Thailand for the umpteenth time to complete her role on The White Lotus season three. She’ll then return to New York for the third season of her other hit HBO series, The Gilded Age. Whigham, who will soon be reuniting with Michael Shannon for the ninth go-round in Death by Lightning, recently wrapped his four-year odyssey in the Mission: Impossible franchise. He filmed the seventh and eighth installments back to back, and despite facing numerous pandemic and strike obstacles along the way, his experience concluded with a scene he asked writer-director Christopher McQuarrie for on the set of 2023’s Dead Reckoning.

“I said to Christopher McQuarrie on [Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning]: ‘I don’t want a bigger trailer. I don’t want more money. I don’t want better catering. I just want one scene between Tom and I, where you, McQ, write it like The Usual Suspects, and we get a chance to get in there.’ And he delivered,” Whigham shares.

And to top it all off, Cruise invited Whigham to dinner after their big scene, and the Mission: Impossible leading man made it known that production is far from over.

“We did this scene between Tom and myself, and then Tom said, ‘We’re going to go out to dinner.’ So we went out to dinner when I was done, and then Tom said, ‘Do you realize that we come out one year from today? And it’s going to be a sprint to finish the thing,’” Whigham recalls. “What he’s doing now, people are going to be floored. He wants to make this one like an adventure film, and he and McQuarrie have an idea of what they want to do with it. So it’s going to be amazing.”

Oh, that's right!  That last one was a cliff-hanger, right??  I'd completely forgotten part 1 (except the motorcycle jump off the mountain).

I don't remember much of part 1 at all.  Like I can tell you beat by beat Top Gun: Mavrick, but MI:8 part 1 all I remember is there was a train hanging upside down?
