Card Variant (Dark Charizard)
1 1

4 posts in this topic

Hi,

I am looking to get some Dark Charizard Holo cards graded from Team Rocket Unlimited but first wanted to reach out to the CGC team.

As far as I am aware I have a variant of Dark Charizard that is not yet recognised but is definitely reoccurring. It’s an Ink Dot Dark Charizard.

The Ink dot is found between the yellow boarder and fire symbol on the lower left of the card. It’s somewhat heart shaped.

The ink dot is always Red in colour, always the same shape, size and always in the same location in the card.

I would love if it could become a recognised variant or at the very least not have the downgrade due to the Ink dot. I own a couple the same and I have seen others on eBay etc. One that I own is up there for Gem mint potential and it would be ashame if the ink dot subtracted from the overall gradeZ

I want to send them to CGC for grading so I decided to buy a couple of the same variant to send them together so it’s recognised by the grader as a recurring factory ink dot opposed to just some random ink on a random card.

It’s worth noting that The Variant is only found on the holographic Dark Charizard from Team Rocket unlimited.

It seems pretty rare but when you actually start to look for them you see them pop up every now and then.

The colour of the ink surrounding the ink dot is somewhat white, like it’s missing some ink and the extra ink went into the centre to form the ink dot.

Im really not sure what went wrong to cause this variant to exist but it is definitely a variant of its own.

If it could be a recognised ink dot error thy would be excellent, it deserves it. If not could it please not detract from the overall grade.

I’ve attached some images from the same variant of Dark charizard found on eBay

I can include photos of my own personal cards if required and could get some really clear shots of the ink dot area.

thanks

Hello @Munkii

Thank you for reaching out to us. The grading team would be happy to review the card and evaluate it for an error designation. Unfortunately, I cannot assess or confirm error designations via photos.

You can review the TCG Error Guide here: CGC Cards | TCG Error Guide. Cards with printing errors should be submitted with the Error service selected. There is currently no additional charge for Error service.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Thanks kindly for the response @NickiO CS. It’s hugely appreciated.

If i were to submit via the error service could I maybe include a short note describing the suspected error so that the grader knows what to look for.

Out of interest, can a card with a print error such as an Ink dot still achieve a grade of say Gem Mint 10. I’m not referring to my card of course but what I mean I guess if a card with an ink dot is gem mint, will an ink dot error take away from that. If you can’t answer I’m totally ok with that.

thanks

Hello @Munkii, yes, you may include a note on your submission form of the error you believe your card to have. This will be reviewed when grading your card. However, unfortunately, we would not be able to confirm with certainty that a card with a print error would be able to achieve a Gem Mint 10 grade since by definition, it is a "manufacturing defect".We hope this makes sense.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thank you!
