How to Get Hot Babes

94 posts in this topic

Comic collectors turn me on. Oooh, baby, wear that spandex, and I'll strap on my golden lasso! Whisper heroic things in my ear. And every girl knows that the first anniversary is paper and the second is mylar. Woo me with silver age and catch me with golden age.

I bet I could make a mint opening up a comic book phone sex company.

Full disclosure is fine for most things, but comic collecting has a stigma that just won't quit. Even porn isn't a big deal compared to a comic

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. I'm fully aware of the stigma, but it hasn't affected me in the slightest. Most girls who have dated me for more than a few months inevitably found out that I collect comics. Most didn't even bat an eyelash at it, and a few(including my gorgeous ex) even found it interesting.

Now obviously it isn't the first thing I tell a girl, and I don't go out of my way to talk about it, but I don't really try to hide it either. I don't have the stereotypical exterior of a comic collector, and I don't talk much about them outside of other collectors, and I have a lot of other interests, so why should it matter? Women like self confidence, and if you have a "I collect comics, and so F$%KING what" type of attitude, and the woman actually LIKES you, then she won't care either.

Also, Do you guys have any idea how many hot girls I saw at the Spidey movie on opening weekend? Times have changed.

Circa 1988-94, you would have been a very, very lonely man. grin.gif

I think I just got lucky. My wife looks pretty good and is pretty cool at the same time. She knew I collected books. In fact, she even reads some of em now. Now that we are married she is still cool with everything. Whew.

Why is that?

I was 16 in 1994, and I was having loads of fun.

I'll say it again: If a girl REALLY LIKES YOU, she won't care about the comics. Women are less fickle then Men, especially when they're into the other things that make you tick.

Did you ever consider that she was just looking for a reson to bolt?grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif The only comic collectors that are labeled as "geeks" are the ones that actually are "geeks".

I would also recommend to anyone that if a girl thinks comics are "geeky", grab the Overstreet and walk her through a book by book appraisal of your collection. That'll get her.....excited. wink.gif

And if your collection blows becuase you spent all your cash on Valiants in the 90's, I suggest getting to the gym and pumping those guns. When in doubt, "flex for sex". grin.gif

Different era, different times and I can't expect you to understand. Growing up in the 1970's to early-1980's comics were still on the newstand and many women from "my generation" grew up with that in mind.

I was just relaying a story to make a point, so make all the jokes you want. That hottie had a good 8 hours to bolt that night and some previous excursions to boot. grin.gif

I have noticed that it's become a lot more acceptable lately, and that's due to values spiking in the 90's to now. People love to talk about valuable collectibles and I've even had board meetings where a big wig mentions he just bought a ultra-expensive coin, card or comic, and we're all ears.

Back in the mid to late-80's, only the earliest Silver Age issues were worth anything, and keys we have today like FF 48 and ASM 50 were commons, and even ASM 14 was pretty cheap. I remember reading around 1984 that you could buy a full run of ASM in VF/NM for around a grand.

Collecting was certainly a lot less sexy then, than in the 1990's or 2000's.

I guess it's who you know....

The "80s" was my prime carousing decade and I never had a problem with the women. Like Andrew, my girlfriends didn't seem to care that I read comics but that wasn't the only thing I did either. And anyway if the chick can't get pass that, she probably isn't the girl for you. There are many many more out there for the taking. And anyway, the way I look at it, there are multitudes of things women do that bother guys but we deal with them. They should think of it as "leaving the toliet seat up........

Maybe so, but in my extensive grin.gif research, classy hotties tend to view you differently (at least then) if you have the stigma of a comic collector. Granted, I didn't exactly trot them all in and pull out my collection, but there were a few cases (like the one I mentioned), along with other more overt comments bandied about.

Now you could get all psycho-analytical about why they felt that way (social class is one of my theories), but I just played the game. And as for the BS about "them not being the girl for you" I could care less, as I never looked a gift bimbo in the mouth. grin.gif

That's about all I intend to say about the subject, as the insinuation seems to be that I ran around campus with stacks of comic books, wore coke bottle glasses and a pocket protector. grin.gif

Damn you just burst my bubble. I thought I had you pegged Joe. laugh.gif

I can't really comment as I'm a child of the late '80s early '90s who got his wife (girlfriend at the time) to work at a comic shop on the weekends. I was actually able to get my wife to read some books like SIP and Leave it to Chance.

AK, how dare you use the Valiant name in vain! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifsmirk.giftongue.gifgrin.gif

My GF is pretty cool with it - she accompanied me to the first night of the Heritage auctions here in the city and this past weekend took me to a comic book shop by her parents place when we went there for Easter. I was even able to get 2 batman books that I needed for the collection!!

I can see Spider-Man having an effect on comic acceptance, but would have thought that Batman 1989 had a similar effect? crazy.giflaugh.gif

I'll tell you what has had an effect on comic collecting acceptance:

M-O-N-E-Y

I noticed it myself, when describing a "copy of GS X-Men #1" and a "NM copy of X-Men #1 worth $500".

Quite a different reception from the viewee. grin.gif

Here, here. There was a similar thread months ago, but AK has it right. The key was acting cool and defiant about your collecting. When I was in college (during the years JC states comic collecting would never fly with the ladies-and in Canada, yet) I never had a problem with my comics interferring with dating. And my obsession was way too obvious to be hidden--weekend trips to comic stores on the outskirts of Montreal, blowing class off to hit the nearest shop, running out of beer money (well, almost) because I just picked up a NM run of Starlin Capt. Marvels, etc. I just always acted like "if you don't like it, tough". Man, those were fun years.

And, just to point out that even telling a woman about it on a first date doesn't hurt....I told my wife on our first real date. She thought it was damn cool. Only later did I find come home to find her getting all worked up over a crappy 1960's Capt. America cartoon ("When Capt. America throws his might shield........"). I think it was a suspence filled Batroc episode .
