Breaking the Slab Seal For A Signature?
1 1

8 posts in this topic

I just purchased a 9.9 graded comic art cover and was wonder if it was possible to break the seal to have the cover artist sign it? I know that there has to be a CGC rep. there to authenticate the signature at the time of signing.

Two of my questions is...

1. How can I go about having it signed and authenticated by the cover artist without going to a Con or Private signing host by CGC?

2. How can I assure that I would get the same grade throughout the process of trying to have the cover signed?

I can get the all the information that would be required to get this comic to the cover artist for signature.

1. He has a very active Facebook page. Reach out to him and see if he would break the case, sign it and submit it for you to CGC

2. There is no guarantee that having it signed and re-graded will come back as a 9.9. The original people that determined the grade of that comic may not be the ones that grade it when re-submitting it. It's Russian Roulette.

Thanks for the reply Greengiant.

I've already spoken to Victor as I have had him do some custom work for me before. Getting his signature will ironically be the easy part of the whole deal. I guess now my only question would be how would the signature be authenticated by CGC? Could you or would there be anyone on the forum that could possibly have an answer to that question for me?

Thanks.

The easiest way for it to be authenticated by CGC is that Victor would sign the book and then complete CGC Signature Series paperwork. Since he is the artist, he is verifying that it is his signature to them. If you look at his Facebook posts, he posts about sending paperwork for his Beetlejuice covers.

keep it as a 9.9 blue label and get him to sign/remarq a 9.8 copy. If you crack that book I will 99% assure you it will come back a 9.8 or lower.

or you can have him just sign/remarq the case.

If you are determined to no longer own a 9.9 then there are tons of facilitators that will handle all of this for you if they are attending the same convention.

Thanks, DougC, Ron C. & Greengiant

I really appreciate the advice and it looks like I will not be cracking this 9.9 case for a signature, because I know how rare a 9.9 grading comes around. It really sucks because I could get his signature so easy... I guess I'm only left with what could have been with a 9.9 graded signature yellow label.

Do not crack 9.9s or 10s

Unless you have multiple. Then swing for it. I’m actually afraid now to submit 9.8s, as reference.

I do believe, as a side bar, foils, for whatever reason, due to the poly covers, tend to hold up their grades better, so if you have a 9.9 foil cover, you probably have a 25% chance of keeping the grade, vs a traditional book which, imho, would have a 1% or 2% chance.
