Dc heroes in the public domain (2034)
1 1

I read on an article that our favourite heroes will be launched in the public domain like Mikey and others recently, thats just terrible! Did you see what people make at the first second it s happened with Mickey, we will see some awful representation of them!

On your opinion, how it will affect directly the comic books?

Will DC continue to publish content on them?

It will affect the value of the old comics?

All that enters public domain in 2034 is Superman, as he was when he first appeared.   So, all the Superman mythology that was introduced in subsequent issues (such as flying) has to wait until the 96th anniversary of those developments.   Anyone could do a comic in 2034 about a non flying version of Superman that beats up sleazy landlords and wifebeaters, as Superman did in his early issues (Grant Morrison wrote similar tales when he worked on Action for the New 52).

if it was good enough to read, one would wonder why the creators would not just work at DC.   Probably somebody will do something terrible for shock value like the Winnie the Pooh horror movie, but I question how many people really watch such things (particularly more than the first ten minutes).

Here in Canada, the James Bond novels are in public domain.  I am not aware of anybody trying to do anything with them though.

Stuff like Disney was supposed to have entered the public domain decades ago... Public domain is Important and Needed for the betterment of all Mankind.

P.S. Public Domain will be a NON-factor in "value" of old comics. The largest factor in that will be loss of collectors via attrition.  The hobby will continue to hemorrhage collectors compared to the tiny shrinking trickle of new collectors. Eventually the Comic Hobby will become like the Stamp Hobby (once the largest hobby in the world) it's inevitable.

Honnestly all of it is just ridiculous...

So they will be limited to use his ulterior power for a while but they could give to him power that he never had, be ready for a superman who can change himself in a tiger and spitting fire...

Superman inspired the Super-Hero genre. The character has been copied six ways to Sunday for the last 9 Decades!

Public domain is Important and Needed for the betterment of all Mankind.

Why people dont create their own charachters from the bottom it would be just better than destroy a myth

Public domain is Important

Repeating for those in the back. Copyrights don't need to be passed down for four generations for the sole purpose of $$$ going to those who had little or nothing to do with the creation of the art/content. Imagine if Shakespeare was copyrighted to some rich-af English family (or worse, a mega-corporation like Disney).

My impression is that somehow the family estates still have their hooks in with Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes.  Not sure how that it is a thing when Tarzan started in 1912, and Sherlock was 1887.

In January 2023, the world's greatest detective, Sherlock Holmes, fully entered the public domain. Thanks to the expiration of the copyright on The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, the iconic detective of 221B Baker St. joined Dracula, Tarzan and Peter Pan as public property.

Tarzan - character is public domain. Most of the stories/books are as well.

However some of the later books/stories are not yet. Thus adaptions of those require an arrangement with the ERB estate

It's not going to 'destroy' Superman. All your comics will still be there, same as they always were.
