Nobody would trade me their comics for it since it was oversized/"comic"ally large. Everybody would go to each other's houses with a stack of comics to trade, and here I'd come with my one comic the size of a coffee table that nobody wanted. I think I bagged it in a pillowcase (jk). I remember nothing about buying this book - all I know is that it's been with me since 12 cents meant something. It shows the love for sure. I was discussing with the wife about this, and it occurred to me that I also read a lot of richie rich and I still am a fan to this day. My observation is that, I don't really remember any one particular comic book. I remember situations that richie rich would get into and what not, but there isn't a cover that stands out or a story line that blew my mind. I know all of the characters and settings, but I can't say "issue 6 was a banger!" I think one thing about richie rich and Casper too, another one I really enjoyed, was the sort of generic presentation of the characters. I liked that I could miss an issue and it was no big deal. Many of the 40-centers from that era are still tattooed on my brain, particularly Batman and Superman and the team-up titles (Brave and the Bold, DC Comics Presents). And there were some weird random horror covers that as a kid I found scary to look at, even on super tame titles like Justice League of America and Superboy. Those left an impression as well. Then there were those DC Dollar Comics. I was fascinated by those, but my allowance was 50 cents and I could rarely save up for one before they disappeared from the racks. Decades later, I went back and collected the Detective Comics Dollar run in high grade. They're still pretty cool to look at. There was a surprisingly good "Tales of Gotham City" backup feature running through most issues, which really brings back how seedy NYC was in the late 70s/early 80s. On the Marvel side, I do remember specifically that Amazing Spiderman #201 was the first issue I bought. It was a quite good cliffhanger story with the Punisher. I missed #202 and spent years wondering how it resolved... back then no internet and limited access to back issue shops, so if you missed an issue it was gone, arrgh! I had obtained a copy of 66 for free a few weeks prior, and when I went comic shopping for the first time, this was the coolest Wolverine cover I could afford with the money in my pocket at the time. Quarter bins, fifity cent and 2 for a dollar bins. I know I grabbed a stack of books that first time (spent around $15-20 tops) and while I cannot recall exactly what was in the pile, this was for sure one because I was a huge Spidey fan I know there also had to have been some Weird War, Sgt Rock and GI Combat as those were what my dad liked and I did too. Plus, at the time books like this were $1-2 tops. Whereas ASM issues were $4-6 or more! Silly little me figured the better bargain was getting more books. Who knows what ASM gems I passed over.
