This is my fave of the three - I've used it as an avatar at the Digital Comics Museum for years now. Baumhofer did some great Docs, but you just can't beat the playfulness of his mooks on Adventures. Oh I agree, Great cover!!! Artifiction, jimjum12 and Pat Calhoun

There's a larger image from a 2 issue lot at Heritage in 2018 but it's not nearly as pretty of a copy (or perhaps restoration) as this one. This showcases how much art tastes can change, even over a relatively short period. Blue Book's remarkably consistent art department policy was to put the reader into a scene from one of the interior stories in as realistic a manner as they could. They saw themselves as a literary magazine, and so were never going to make half-clad women on torture racks a subject staple of theirs. But in the 1930s, I've no doubt whatsoever that if you placed a Blue Book cover next to a Weird Tales and a Spicy, and asked a casual passerby which magazine had the superior art, Blue Book would win pretty much every time. Their westerns are inspired by Remington and others, and their attention to detail was pretty solid. One of the problems with collecting Blue Books today is that they often emphasized a darker moodier palette, with more natural lighting. These look beautiful when in high grade... but wear and tear and a few creases can markedly diminish their effect, even more so than many pulps. jimjum12, waaaghboss, Point Five and 7 others 9

What appeals to me is the focus on Illustration Styles that are the most popular in their respective eras. The magazine ran from the early 1900's to the 50's and we see successful nods to Mucha, NC Wyeth, and Remington, among others. It was a wildly popular, first-rate publication that echoes the times in a spectacular fashion. Mind you there was a pure, simple vitality that characterized those days. Popular Post Darwination
So, full disclosure, I'm not a huge fan of "test tube" covers, nor is this a cover I'd hold up as a favorite Saunders. But I do recall the painting being something of a record for a pulp cover painting sale back in 2008 at 42,000? That issue always seems to command a premium.
