historic sales of issues

Great question.

I’m a huge fan of GPAnalysis.com.  You get a history of graded sales from a number of different platforms.  Their interface is a little outdated and clunky, but it does exactly what I need it to do.  It will show you average sales of FF 48 for those years, and you can drill down to individual sales.

It is not the right tool if you want sales of raw books. But for slabbed books, it does a great job.

I tried the free GPA just now - it seems to go back only to 2022 avg, unless with paid version you can go further.

ebay surprisingly goes back 3 years.

its crazy, a slabbed 7.5 ASM 101 went on avg for $1200 in 2021 (ebay), and now 2024 its at $400... 1/3 the price!

Yeah, there was a boom a few years ago when people were willing to pay the high prices. Seems to have settled back down although some folks still try to sell for those high prices like it's still 2020/2021...

I have been doing this every 6 month's (June and December) for my top 150 - 200 books since 2015 and have all of the FMV prices (based on eBay sold auctions for books in the same grade) stored on my laptop.

F.F. 48 - GD 2.0

2015 - $118.00

2016 - $105.00

2017 - $80.00

2018 - $192.00

2019 - $430.00

2020 - $550.00

2021 - $1200.00

2022 - $1100.00 (June), $750.00 (December)

2023 - $400.00

2024 - $450.00

GPA is my first choice, especially for slabbed books.  The data goes back about 20 years.

ebay is useful but the info only goes back about a month.

Heritage auctions is very useful as there's about 600,000 comic sales captured - free membership required.

Yes, prices have crashed for most SA to MA books and some GA books.  Most 50% or more lower from peak covid.  Generally common SA keys and semi keys got destroyed.  Fantastic Four 48 for example is a blood bath.  It's an important book but there's tons of copies out there and when demand drops the plentiful supply crashes the price.  There are GA books that have increased since Covid - Matt Baker and LB Cole covers and classic Timelys for example

aside from high demand/low supply, what else drives prices higher in comics industry? good economy is the only one I can think of.

natural growth of inflation

Movies. Any book where a character is showing up in the MCU immediately gets an artificial bump bc casuals looking to “invest” jump on their first appearance. If Disney hadn’t screwed up by announcing a lady Silver Surfer, the FF book would’ve jumped more off movie hype.

it looks like we are back at 2019 pricing roughly. as long as it doesn't go lower.

It was the pandemic that caused prices to increase drastically since everyone was stuck at home and had nothing else to do but "buy, buy, buy", now prices are coming back to normal.

The FMV for my top 50 books which I did not start keeping separate records for until 2022.

2022 - $34,170.00

2023 - $25,070.00

2024 - (As of June) - $25,735.00

It appears that things have stabilized as 2023 and 2024 are basically the same.

Just a few examples of prices through the last 5 years...

Incredible Hulk 181 Raw FN/VF 7.0 W/MVS - 2019 $2500.00, 2021 $4000.00 2024 $2600.00

Fantastic Four 5 Raw FR/GD 1.5 - 2019 $800.00, 2021 $3600.00 2024 $2300.00

Amazing Spider-Man 14 Raw VG/FN 5.0 - 2019 $830.00, 2021 $2600.00, 2024 $1500.00

Avengers 4 Raw GD/VG 3.0 - 2019 $450.00, 2021 $1200.00 2024 $750.00

Strange Tales 110 Raw GD 2.0 - 2019 $700.00, 2021 $1200.00, 2024 $1000.00
