Hopefully the threads here discussing comics will be rather more laid back than over there where people are bragging who is the biggest Marvel Zombie, or pointlessly bickering if it was Stan or Jack who invented the Marvel Universe.

If anyone hasn't read this little book published way back in 1971 then it is a useful primer on Victorian to "modern" comics from a UK perspective.

The first link gets you a 30MB pdf of the paperback. The second link is a smaller 10MB .cbr file if you can view those.

Nice! I want to buy a copy of this - can i ask where you bought this book?

FeEbay...  with patience (so I didn't spend $50 on a BIN).  I see a copy there now for around $40.  I didn't really know what to expect from it, but with images of Dr Occult I wasn't able to resist.

There are many cheaper books with more pages out there covering the same period. Perhaps @Yorick could let you know if it is worth £25 or not.

Wooley's book/magazine/essay is 50+ pages of researched origins of the superhero and the precursor comics.  If you enjoy victorian/platinum age comics... it is an essential reference.

There are photographic examples of many early comics throughout the essay (all black and white though).  Wooley published this in 1986 with a print run of 1,150 copies.  Not sure if it ever saw continued printing.
