I know if I won the lottery tomorrow,I would offer doug 500K for his F.F. # 1,just to get it out of my system. It also wouldn't surprise me if he declined the offer.I know I remember hearing rumors of "the Dentist" rejecting offers of 2 million for his Action #1 893whatthe.gif.Heck,I'd offer him 40K for his F.F. #18 If I had the cash. The ironic thing about all this is that most of the books that have performed the best for me are the ones that I considered myself moronic for paying so much for.GOD BLESS...

I agree. I've bought a couple of books that people said i was insane for, and they have worked out for me. thumbsup2.gif

Just as a reminder of an earlier post, here again is the original sales list of Slobodian books from Marnin Rosenberg that includes the phenomenal run of FFs. The list is from an ad in CBG around 1997, and from today's perspective one needs to be reminded that the prices were considered extremely aggressive for their time.

Thanks for putting this up again, Bob. Does anyone have a Guide from 1997 handy to compute the multiples of some of the key books?

Marnin graded the FF4 a 9.8 with white pages (the asterisk), so it must be an absolutely sensational copy.

He's probably still fuming that CGC "only" gave it a 9.6. grin.gif

The Hulk 4 from this collection can also be seen in Doug's vault, another stunning 9.6. According to Doug, the FF 1 originally graded at 9.2, and may have been upgraded to 9.4.

I've always considered Marnin to be one of the very best graders out there.

I quote from one of the threads I was referring to: "Or do you actually believe CGC can tell the difference between a NM and a NM+ with enough accuracy to support the inane multiples those numbers continue to produce?" So I stand by my statement that there are some who believe there is no discernible difference between a 9.4 (NM) and 9.6 (NM+), and I offer as proof this 9.6 FF #4 which anyone who's not blind can see is clearly superior to a 9.4, and which CGC will be able to distinguish from a 9.4 book 100 out of 100 times.

Stop mischaracterizing my views! Christo_pull_hair.gifpoke2.gif I never said that all 9.4s and 9.6s are the same. I just said that there are enough that ARE the same (or have been manipulated into a higher grade) to cast serious doubt on the multiples being paid. Having a single example of a 9.6 that is better than a single 9.4 doesn't even make a dent in my argument. confused-smiley-013.gif

I've been shepherdized! blush.gifsorry.gif27_laughing.gif

I had intended to quote Batman Fan from that same thread, but he didn't provide any sufficiently pithy quotes. Yours was so perfect, Andy, all I had to do was take it out of context and hope you either wouldn't read this thread or had forgotten you said it! flowerred.gif

I was going to say I'd been caught, but I figured saying shepherdized would be funnier (for the lawyers, anyways). Haven't done it myself in, oh, 10 years or so. Don't you litigator types still need to shepherdize your case cites?

No, I hadn't. Is it for real? The seller is an unreputable seller, no?

Yes, I have heard the seller is bad news. That said, it seems probable that he really owns that issue. Have you ever seen that book before? Disreputable or not, I would think Barks fans would be chomping at the bit to get ahold of it.

Tim;

I'll give it a quick shot with a few of the keys books even though it's hard to see some of the actual ad prices from the scan:

1) AMS #2 - NM for $5,000.................OS guide of $2,800

2) FF #1 - NM/NM+ for $25,000..........OS guide of $18,000

3) FF #4 - NM/NM+ for $7,000............OS guide of $2,600

4) JIM #83 - NM for $6,000.................OS guide of $4,200.

Multiples doesn't appear to be that large compared to today's SA multiples. Does look like he has a larger than normal multiple on the FF #4 though in comparison to the other books.

Let me know if you need anymore OS prices from 97 even though I might not be able to see some of the ad prices very clearly.

Did you see how many ads he had in CBG listing NM, NM+, NM/M comics in the 90s?

He may be able to grade, but that doesn't mean he always chose to.

Yeah, and a lot of them were Massachusetts and Slobodian books which were indeed as nice as he represented them to be. confused-smiley-013.gif Feel free to point out any glaring exceptions that you're aware of, or dealers who you think are better, but I've purchased big ticket raw books from almost all of the big mail order dealers and Marnin is the ONLY one whose "NM" books were consistently really NMs (not just in CGC's opinion, but in my opinion).

Thanks Lou.

Bob will have to pitch in to confirm, but I think the FF #1 says NM/NM-, and I think the FF #4 says NM/M. There's no way Marnin would be charging less than a 1.5X multiple for a NM/NM+ FF #1!

If that's correct, then the multiples would be consistent with my recollection from those days. That would put the FF #4 at almost 3X Guide, which if I recall was in line with what Marnin usually charged for NM/M books and also in line with the kinds of multiples that Roter was asking for NM+ and higher PC books. Looking at the JIM #83 price, it's hard to remember there was a time when those early JIMs were not so highly coveted.

If you could, I'd like to also know the 97 OS price for the following books:

ASM #7 (NM/NM+)

ASM #9 (NM/M)

ASM #10 (NM/M)

Avengers #4 (NM)

FF #10 (NM/NM+?)

Hulk #2 (NM+)

Hulk #4 (NM+)

TTA #40 (NM/NM+)

X-Men #5 (NM/M)

X-Men #7 (NM/M)

Anyone have any idea if any of these have been graded by CGC and if so, what grades they received?

That book is so sharp and scarce in grade that the asking price actually seems reasonable(relatively speaking).Doug sure has some nice books.GOD BLESS...

Godalmighty is IS gorgeous! but at 50K, twice the most a 9.4 sold for (if memory serves...) I'll pass. When I see these prices, I always think of the Don Corleone line...: "How did things get like this?" sigh. Seems to me that every dollar of popssible appreciation is built in to priced books like this. Investment piece indeed! It sure HAS been, Doug!! for YOU!

Yup! Retail at it's finest!!! 50 years from now it will be worth more than the asking price i bet!
