What was your first post on the boards???

66 posts in this topic

With all the talk of board history... and changes over the years... I went back to look for my very first post.

I found it in a thread entitled "Best Single Issue Story" started by gman (who registered after me but posted before me)...

This was my first post, made #29060 - 08/27/02 08:29 AM

FF #51 - I have handsold this book at least 30 times offering to buy it back if the customer didn't think it was one of the best stories they had ever read. No one has EVER brought one back.

Tangled Web #4 - I couldn't believe how good this was the day it came out. It has deserved the awards it has won, and I think it stands with any Spidey story ever written

A full four weeks after I had registered... marking the first time I jumped into the fray.

So what was your first post? It's easy enough to find... Just go to the search page, enter your name under "User Name Search" and make sure that "All Forums" is highlighted on the left side. You can save the server some effort if you ask for the time period when you started...

And just as an aside... here was Bugaboo's very first post. Which believe it or not, I actually remember reading within minutes of its arrival. If only we knew then...

In a thread titled "***Ebay Shill Bidding Warning*** Bronze seller" and started by the original Vigilante Dachsund himself, Rickdogg...

#68405 - 11/25/02 02:10 AM

Over the years, I have caught several of these shill bidders and always report them to eBay. From now on, I'll make sure to report on them in here as well. mad.gif

Thread titled - Introductions Galore!

#760920 - Thu Mar 24 2005 12:22 PM

My very first post/thread

Hi, new meber here just giving a brief introduction. (Feel free to throw all manner of rotten vegetables at me) My name is actually Lewis from Glasgow now living in Carlisle. I collect all any types of comics though my favourite/specials are Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Action Comics.

Sent off my first ever submissions to CGC a while ago and was very excited to find out they had recieved them so i'm now eagerly awaiting to see what grades they give them (especially my hopeful mint Darkchylde The Sketchbook)I will admit though i am far from an expert when it comes to grading. Knowing my luck with things it will come back a 5 or something like that *laughs* No i'm not THAT bad.

I have noticed that their turnaround time on the modern books has been delayed by two weeks Ahh well i'm a patient fellar!

But anyways i just thought id let you all know who i am and hope you all wont kill me hehe Ta (p.s Please say hi :P)

So what was your first post?

Strangely enough a reply to one of your posts....and even stranger, I waited more than a full month after registering before posting my first post blush.gif

And even more strangelierest....I also replied to someone who joined after me but posted earlier (you !)

You asked for the best single issue complete story

And this was my reply

Some submission from left-field....

Marvel Fanfare #7 Hulk vs. Unus & Blob. A very moving story, about true friendship and three guys who jus want to be left alone be seem to attract trouble like magnets. I read this story when I was 14 and moved enough by it to always remember it (even after I sold my initial collection) I bought and read it again after 20 years and it was as good as I remember even if it now was server with a healthy dose of nostalgia sauce.

Two-In-One Annual #7 This has everything that makes a comic fun ! Epic scale, danger, heroism, tragedy and honour.

It's the story of one of the Elders (Champion) challenging the strongest of Earth's heroes to a boxing match, Ben Grimm manages to save the day while getting beaten to a bloody pulp and refusing to quit.

Inhumans Marvel GN A moving story by Ann Nocenti about life-choices and the unsupportable weight of responsibility

You know you're old-skool if your first post was as "Anonymous" 27_laughing.gif

Just guess which thread this was from:

Haven't read all the responses, but I have read Mr. Silver Age's summary in CBG.

I'd just note that his requirement that the Bronze Age be tied to super heroes as were the Golden/Silver Ages is just an assumption. Old time fans did previously speak of the Silver Age as the "Second Heroic Age." On that basis, I'd be prepared to speak of Giant Size X-Men #1 as the beginning of a "Third Heroic Age."

But the beginning of Bronze? No.

Instead we have to bow to popular usage. Just as the Infantino Flash, the Ditko

Spider-Man, the Kane G.L. and the beginnings of the JLA and FF are universally understood to be Silver Age, so too is there overwhelming consensus that Barry Smith's Conan, GL/GA, Neal Adams Batman, Kirby's Fourth World, Wrightson's Swamp Thing and the Kree-Skrull War all belong to the Bronze Age.

So my choice for the beginning of the Bronze Age is Detective 395, the first O'Neil/Adams Batman story, cover dated January 1970. Just as the Silver Age brought forward a new artistic take to mainstream comics (Infantino, Anderson, Gil Kane, Ditko, Nick Cardy, Romita, Kirby's "cosmic" style), so too did the Bronze Age usher in Adams, Wrightson, Kaluta, Barry Smith, etc. as the models to emulate. Also, the early 70's GL, Batman, Superman were as different from their 1960's counterparts as were the Silver Age heroes from the Golden Age.

The Bronze Age ended with G.S. X-Men #1, which began the Third Heroic Age, or the Modern Age, or the post-Newstand Age, in which the direct market was king.

And that is that. Cheers...Zonker

Bruce,

The hardest book to find on in high grade is Strange Tales #135 in 9.4 or better.

I've only seen just 1 copy in a year and a half. It sold for $670.00.

I'm just hoping that this book will start poping up.

Yes, I know this is a bronze age section.

I definitely believe more copies of HFH #1 will start poping up in 9.6 or better.

It's a #1 and people always bought the #1 issues. It's just a matter of time.

We were posting about Hero for Hire #1. I HAD a 9.6 with white pages that I sold to Bronzebruce sometime later on. I think he still has it.

Is that from that thread where someone tries to argue that GS X-men #1 started the Bronze Age?!?! screwy.gif

I'm Old Skool...my earliest threads have been archived, including the one where I indicated comic prices had surely hit a glass ceiling, how wrong I turned out to be on that one!?! 27_laughing.gif

However, not all is lost in cyber-space - here's are some gem snippets of an early on-line discussion I participated in regarding CGC:

There is a company that is grading comics and putting them in sealed plastic containers. You pay for this service. If and when you sell the comic book, you'll add your cost of this appraisal to your comic. That cash goes directly to the owners of this company. The owners are involved in the distribution of comic books, and even the price guides. If you feel the comic market is being manipulated, it probably is.

What the hel* is this hair-brained idea supposed to be?

Yep, it's called the "Comics Guaranty Corporation" and I hope it fails miserably b/c as you state, it's simply going to add more $ to a hobby that's already too pricey. I've yet to really see any adds or people putting this stuff on ebay, but you know it's inevitable...and sad frown.gif. Look for the big NY dealers to "unveil" these pre-graded/sealed comics in the next few months, and hold on...hopefully it won't ruin our hobby.

Read the whole, ugly thread right here!

Surprisingly, my first post was in the Silver Forum back in September 2003 893whatthe.gif

Iron Man and Sub-Mariner # 1 Thread

using recorded eBay prices:

"I have some eBay sales records from 2001. In Fine ungraded it sold for about $ 33 against a guide value of $ 40 and $ 130 in NM for a guide value of $ 150. It tends to go for under guide."

I wouldn't post again until February 2004.

Earliest in the system is this one:

Dude, your post reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld, but alas, I can't remember the name of the character the show was about. Anyhow, for example, let's say his name was "Matt". Half the show he was talking about "The Matt" in the 3rd person, with the punchline being that the person he kept referring to was himself.

At this point I think you'd be better off staying underground...Matt..c****k***, or whoever you are. It's pretty obvious that you're not going to win anyone over with your responses here, so it's probably just a waste of everyone's time for you to keep trying...

And based on the fact that you had just two posts each in July and August, I'd say it's a safe bet that's the beginning of drbanner on the boards. thumbsup2.gif And the fact that it was in a comic-keys thread... cloud9.gif
