CGC FORUM TOP BRONZE AGE COVERS - #6

27 posts in this topic

In order to get into the Top 6 you had to have a not only a lot of votes, but a lot of 1st and 2nd place votes. In order to accomplish that Cover #6 sees the return of two popular figures to the poll: Superman and Neal Adams. The second Superman Adams cover in the Top 20 is certainly one for the ages, simple yet powerful, an image that has definitely stood the test of time.

Thanks to johnenock and jeffreykli for nominating this cover. thumbsup2.gif

Classic cover, and another Adams' beauty! cloud9.gif

If you read the CBM Neal Adams issue (#40, which should be required reading for all Adams' fans!), he comments that he didn't care to do covers with the hero just standing there. However, this is sort of a homage cover anyway (Superman 11), so I guess he let it slide... confused-smiley-013.gif

I'd say the cover is decidedly not that Adams-ish. Could be 'cause it's an homage, but the face and the pose don't evoke the true Adams style for me. Not bad, and definitely an icon cover, but not one of my faves.

Not much to say here...this one easily made my top 5 (I believe I voted it #2). A simple, bold, iconic image with stunning colors...and with a great deal of symbolic power as well, ushering in the bronze age Superman & bidding farewell to the silver age incarnation. Love it!

Case in point: I'm not a huge Supes fan, but Rocketeer recently tossed in the below book as a Freebie 893whatthe.gif in my recent order from him. I think it outdoes the above issue in just about every aspect . . . whaddya all think?

Agree completely! One of my favorite Adams pieces of all. I may have nominated this one (unofficially at least) in another thread. The coloring is superb on this, with the green krptonite glow and Supes' intense expression...

Boo. insane.gif I never liked the green face and it does not have that iconic image vibe going for it(I know I'm killing you with my technical rhetoric screwy.gif). Though Supes was my #1 choice at the time of voting, it defines him from my POV, my favorite Adams -c is JLA 138 Adam Strange(now that's a classic).

...I don't think a lot of hard core Adams fans liked this cover when it came out,..his pencils were getting a little loose towards the end of his DC run,...there is definitely a difference between the Adams covers prior to 1974 and after,...

I agree that his style and perhaps, concentration level varied from his earlier work (maybe he wasn't as hungry . . .) but I'll toss my hat into the ring on the JLA cover too, it's a great composition (even if the JLA characters took him about 5 minutes to sketch . . .)
