Owning multiple copies of back issues - why do we do it?

135 posts in this topic

I'm in the process of selling all my duplicates. I have no need for them and would rather someone else enjoy them, particularly when it's on a rare or expensive book.

I hate when a person hoards countless copies of a single issue and then there are not enough to go round for the rest of us. There was one person who i won't name who had multiple copies of a book that i desperately wanted but refused to sell despite offering market value. I can't understand the logic of that but then it is his/her prerogative.

I also have a policy of never buying more then 2 copies of a new book. Anything more i consider greedy and again i would rather let someone else who needs it get the book. I remember having an "inkling" on Ultimate Spider-Man 1 so i picked up 2 copies. I could have gotten 10 but it wouldn't have been fair on everyone else. Of course if i had known it would be a $100+ book i would have gotten all 10 but even now i don't really regret it because people who couldn't afford 100 bucks would have picked it up and enjoyed it.

:

So, what you are saying is that if you happen to come across a sealed case of a key silver or bronze issue that you could purchase at an estate sale for about $1.00 each, you wouldn't do it because it wouldn't be fair to other people who don't have the book. yeahok.gif

Yeah, that's EXACTLY what i said screwy.gif

screwy.gif right back at ya....so your point is it's not OK to puchase more than 2 copies of a new book but it's Ok to purchase multiples of it once it's no longer a new book. Makes a lot of sense there buddy thumbsup2.gif

I never said it was "not okay" to purchase more than 2 copies of a new book. I said i don't purchase 2 copies of a new book. I couldn't care less what you or anyone else does. You have skewed your argument saying that "imagine you came across boxes of key silver and bronze for a buck each". Well hell, i would buy them and sell them. Who wouldn't? Likewise if i was offered boxes of a new comic for the same price (in juxtaposition) of a Silver/Bronze book for $1 (which would be say 5 cents) then of course i would buy them.

You are just using extreme situations to put forward your point. Not everything is black and white. Im sincere when i say i would rather someone else enjoy a book then have piles of it gathering dust. Maybe it's not something you can comprehend but it's my opinion.

I have always purchased multiple copies of first appearances (Deathlok, Moon Knight, Spiderwoman) in the event the character takes off. I did this with some recent books and the payoff was very good (NYX #3 for example). My LCS had a stack of them sitting there and said that I coud get a deal if I purchased all of them. I did and the book went ballistic right after that. I originally looked ayt it beacuse I like the cover...until someone told me a new character was being introduced.

Doesn't always work that way but if yoy do your homework you can do more than break even.

If you buy right, and sell at the peak, you can make some money. But,a word of caution. A few bad buys will wipe out your profits.

I have to admit that I'm going through this right now with some nice mid-Bronze second and third tier (no ASM or X-Men or Batman) books from 1974-1978 or thereabouts where I'm picking up nice 8.5 - 9.4 copies (mostly 9.0 - 9.2) with great gloss, etc. for 50 cents or a buck, depending, with the shop sort of randomly sprinkling some books out now and then. Mind you, I understand that isn't particularly high grade for that era and none are slab worthy or would sell for over guide or guide, just nice sharp copies, and they may not have much immediate flippability, and definitely not much flippability if I buy 7 copies of one issue (I wish every issue was represented, but he has like 15 of one and none of others)... but they sure are nice and glossy. What knocks them down might be something like a corner ding from sitting in storage for 25 years. But at those prices they seem like a nice deal given that I've always thought a buck was an extremely reasonably price for new books off the rack (were they a buck, I'd probably buy 30-40 new books a month) and these arre somewhat vintage (though probably exist in higher numbers than today's issues).

Most of my multiple copies have resulted from sheer laziness. I either get "extras" as part of a deal for a book I want, or I end up with a duplicate when I upgrade, and I never get around to selling. eBay is work. Selling to my LCS is impossible. I have hundreds of nice NM+ modern Marvel books, boxes of toys, old comic card sets, etc. that I no longer collect. But, taking time away from the fun of collecting to do the drudgery of selling just doesn't get me motivated.

I have been trying to sell a bit lately with some high dollar stuff because I need the cash and the space, the "comic room" will become the baby's room in October.

Remember everyone, duplicate low-value books should always be given away to the children of family friends, nephews, nieces, children's hospitals, and other deserving places where the books will be read and loved. Just make sure the books are kid-friendly before you hand them off.

Graphic novels should be donated to the local library with a caveat that they have to put the books into circulation, which prohibits them reselling the book for 50 cents at the next book sale.

as for a crash if everyone unloaded multiples at once: that would be true for almost anything out there. imagaine how low diamonds would be if debeers and the russians dumped their vaults. what if museums started unloading en masse the art and antiquities they have in storage (because many museums don't have nearly enough display space to show even a decent chunk of what they own). what if everyone who owns vacation and rental properties dumped them at once?

Or what if JP dumped all his GA all at once?

Oh wait, he did... And the market still seems to be standing. confused-smiley-013.gif

First of all, I thought Cal's post was fantastic. Really explains in a nice way the method behind his "madness." I especially liked the analogy about being a market specialist. I had considering doing the same with either Batman or Cerebus. But then I realized that having a real site that accepts credit cards, etc. would be too expensive without carrying everything.

As far as owning multiple copies, I can relate to an extent. With certain titles I just can't help paying more and stockpiling more because I just like them. Jonah Hex, Master of Kung Fu, war books, Batmans, ducks, etc.
