Got my first order from Metropolis

19 posts in this topic

For the first time in at least 11 years, I missed the May Motor City Con show. (I've skipped the Fall one for about 2 years now as it seems to be less selection each time.) It was due to work, but in all honesty, I had noticed I was seeing a lot of the same old, same old over the last couple of years. I tend to look for VF or better on a lot of Silver Age and NM on Bronze, but I'm never in the market for a $1000 book, etc. (I tend to bring $300 - 400 to a show. ) What I was finding was that some 70's books I remember as a kid weren't at the Show unless they were a "key". Or they were beat up in a $1 Bin, etc. Granted, many of these books are usually only $5 - 25 each in NM.

So, after checking it out, I was impressed with Metropolis's site and I figure I'd give it a try. It was definetly faster as I tended to spend hours searching at a Show. (Which is part of the fun at times. ) It only took a week and a half to get my books, which I thought was good. Now, there is nothing earth-shaking that I got. But the conditions listed appear to be exactly what I got. (Of course, anyone could quibble one way or another, but it was all close enough for me. Some seemed a slight over or under graded. )

Many of the books were stuff from when I was a kid. Some I used to won but had gotten rid of in the mid-80's. Stuff like All-Star Squadron #3 & 4, Avengers #202 & 206, etc. Not anything worth a lot but for $5 in NM9.4, it was nice to have again. Plus they plugged some holes in those collections. I got some Super-Team Family's which I remember seeing at the old drugstores back in the 70's. (#11 & #13) They are in beautiful shape. I also got some books which I already have, but in better shape. Things like JLA #36, X-Men #36, Secret Society Of Super-Villians #5, and so one.

Overall, I have to say that I will probably order from Metropolis again. The grading appears accurate as was the pricing. (Sheesh, this probably sounds like a paid endorsement. :lol )

You didn't miss anything. Everything was either overgraded or overpriced or both. Not much high grade at all. confused-smiley-013.gif

That's what I had been finding. It's probabaly the same for most Cons, but I tend to get an idea right away whether I should even bother looking at certain booths. If the boxes and everything looks beat up, I tend to find that no high grades exist there. If they have a bunch on Modern stuff on their "Wall", like Spawn #1, etc., then I usually deduce that anything from the 90's is old to them. Granted, I take the chance of missing a "gem" somewhere, but at the Shows, I don't have the time to dig through each booth.

At Motor City, I tend to hit the same guys. But lately, it seemed like they had the same stuff or less.

On a side note, I did see there was a bust on DVD's. That's part of the Show that had zero appeal to me so I never bothered looking in on those areas. Though I will add (not being a prude) that I have mentioned to Mike Goldman that I don't think XXX Porn DVD's has any business being out at the Show.

Just got in a Whiz Comics #100 CGC 9.0 White Pages from Metropolis today. I had bought in the past and agree with their grading.

So you agreed with their cgc 9.0 grade? makepoint.gifpoke2.gif

We were talking about this at the Oakland Con. The majority of dealers at conventions now are starting to make Mile High look competitve in terms of grading and pricing. screwy.gif

Still some good dealers at shows but the number is dwindling.

The only business I've done with Metro was over a month ago and still not complete. My card was charged on 4/11/06 and still no comics. Seven weeks and counting......

Actually I found some REALLY nice 9.4 to 9.8 raw bronze for sale at 75% of VF/NM guide or less at the Motor City con. They even had bronze in the $1 bins with no bags and boards that were VF to VF/NM. Must have been a warehouse find as there were sometimes 30 copies of the same issue.

Technically, they have 30 days to get you your items or else you can charge back your credit card.

Have you talked to them? frown.gif No tracking available I take it.

Not even worth the time it would take. $32 worth of comics. I'll give until the end of next week (58 days) then just chargeback on my card and call it a wash.

Wait, was that for the moderns they listed in the marketplace awhile back? If so, PM me...

A few weeks ago I purchased four books, three went back.

I can't say they were over graded however; the detractors didn't meet my approval.

No problems on the returns; money got back on the card in a timely manner.

Emails, offers (rejected), phone calls; the whole experience was pleasant.

I will say this; their policy of not providing scans for books valued less than 200 bucks is as much a hindrance for the buyer as it is to their business operations.

They currently have three books in their inventory that I would gladly purchase at their asking price. However, I am not keen on eating the return shipping fees if once again the detractors of the grade do not warrant the purchase.

After opening all of the books, I will say that some did appear to be graded while bagged. But, it was close enough for me and it fills in some holes. Many said they were NM9.4, but I'd say most of those I'd call a 9.2 or 9.0. The Super-Team Family #11 was in beautiful shape though. I gather if I was spending a bigger dollar amount and really found a huge discrepancy, then I'd probably make contact. But it was fine for me this time. Heck, maybe I grade too hard? lol
