CGC Census - Toughest 9.8s for Copper Age

87 posts in this topic

When you look through the CGC census for Universal Grades on comics dated 1980 - 1992,

and check how often a "lower grade" (9.2 or below) occurs vs. a "high grade" (9.8 or above),

you can get a "ranking" of the toughest 9.8s.

Using a minimum of at least 50 Universal CGC submissions,

a little over 400 different comics (1980-1992) were eligible for this ranking.

Very strange math, and you'd think the ratio of 9.2-9.6 copies to the CGC 9.8 ones would be a better barometer.

Many of those comics have hundreds of CGC 9.6/9.4 copies, and naturally, very few below 9.2 because no one is dumb enough to submit them. Basically, it proves most submitters are smart. confused-smiley-013.gif

Hmm I don't have a problem with the methodology for gauging 9.8s.

Sorry, but I do not see the link between a recent comic having more 9.2 or lower grades, and it being tough to locate in CGC 9.8.

For example, let's say we have the following books:

Comic X: 35 below the mark, 12 9.4's, 5 9.6's and 1 9.8.

Comic Y 96 below the mark, 367 9.4's, 278 9.6's, and 3 9.8's.

Now which book would you rate as "harder to get in CGC 9.8"?

so many coppers are sent in as 9.4/9.6 pre-screens the 9.2 number isn't particularly relevant.

all in all though, i find these low #s of 9.8s surprising because some of those books are ones people are going to submit, at least in some bulk pre-screen. then again, a 9.8 is pretty frigging pristine and to keep even a bagged and boarded 9.8 from looking like a 9.6 after sitting in a box 20-25 years getting pawed over is quite an accomplishment. I can imagine scenarios where that was done, for example triple boarding books on both sides to avoid any potential pine stress from just sitting in the box.

Still an intersting attempt. It's another perspective on the CA market. I liked the way you did the ratio stuff. First time I've seen it done like this. I would probably add an additional criteria like a ceiling on 9.8s because I would not include some of those Xmen in there as there are too many 9.8s on em'.

insane.gif Math makes my head hurt! Seriously though, when you get yourself motivated to go after the highest grades out there, you have to realistically look at the possibility of even acquiring the highest grades. On a popular title, you may increase your chances of getting the high grade books at a premium due to demand. I am trying to complete my Marvel Micronauts run and although I have gotten some issues at a steal, most of these were .25 box fodder and I am having a tough time finding about 20 or so. The ratio system above is similar to the one I have in figuring out how much I am willing to pay for those elusive issues. Good times! sign-rantpost.gif

Not too sure on that formula but here's what I think are some of the hardest copper agers mind you you did nail a few of them in your list.

-ASM202

-ASM208

-ASM216 - I sold the only one with WP 2 years ago - Damn!

-ASM220 - Good luck finding this

-ASM221

-ASM226

-ASM228

-ASM230

-ASM249 - A few out there but still not enough

I only listed Amazing spider-man issues as that's really all my interests are in with regards to comic collecting and X-Men but for now mainly ASM. Alot of Web of Spider-man issues after 10 don't even have 9.8's in the census so I guess not alot of ppl submitted that line.
