Heritage predictions?

What do you think the major Heritage pieces in the August auction will sell for?

I'm interested in the selling price of a bunch of them, and two of them in particular, the Schomburg recreation and the Steranko Shadow painting.

Here's the Steranko Shadow: http://comics.heritageauctions.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=821&Lot_No=44500

Heritage estimates the Steranko painting at $40K - 60K. I'm not so sure that this painting will hit that level. The 14" x 20" Eerie cover that sold a year ago closed at $17.5K.

I realize that fine Shadow work by Steranko is very rare, but I just can't see this painting selling for $40K. I'm going to venture a guess of 30K as the highest bid.

The Schomburg painting is estimated at $20-$30K. This also seems high to me. When was the last time a recreation hit that range? I'm going to venture $18K on this one, max.

I agree that both of those sound high. Here's another one worth tracking:

Frazetta Executioner painting:

They estimate this one between $80-120K. My guess is that it'll hit the low estimate, but not the high.

A great painting, but my estimate is $65k tops...with reserve of course not being met.

If we're talking about the Pyramid/Jove Shadow cover paintings, there's no way that they would sell for only 12K. I would expect those to top 50K. As I mentioned earlier, the Eerie painting sold for 17K. A Shadow cover would have to be more than double that amount.

The Executioner painting is not one of my favorite Frazetta's from that time period. If I had that kind of money and badly wanted a Frazetta, I'd wait for something better, or even go for one of the other paintings in this auction.

I saw this on Scoop regarding the Steranko Shadow painting:

"The original art for Steranko's Pyramid Books Shadow covers from the 1970s never enter the market - Jim has retained all 23 of them"

This is something that I did not know. I've read and have been told that Jim was willing to sell Shadow paintings in the 70s for the right price and assumed that some were sold, however this seems to be incorrect. He WAS selling the prelims, so maybe this is what people recall. I also just read that all the paintings were shown at the Windy City pulp con in May.

If you don't know how great these paintings are, click here for an example:

I was pretty close on my estimate for the Steranko Shadow. Heritage estimated a 40K as the low end of the range for the painting and I said it would close at 30K. The selling price was 34K.

As for the Schomburg painting, Heritage estimated 20K as the low end of their estimated range, and I predicted 18K max. It sold for 10.7K.
