Stocks vs. Comics

I still can't believe this thread has kept going and going... apparently, there's been enough twists and turns to keep it alive... I think this is a fascinating thread. That said, if you like putting your "money for the future" in comics, by all means, be my guest... but I think you're misplacing your money...

I also think it's an interesting in terms of psychology of how resistant most collectors are (of anything) when you talk about the possible devaluation of the their chosen collectible and many times the failure to see the signs as they are presented to people...

Comics vs Porno, what's the upside?

I know people collect Playboys...do they collect other porno items also? Definitely a valid and compelling comparison, please, someone run with it! 893crossfingers-thumb.gifshocked.gif

Povertyrow I want responding to anyone in particular and agree 100% on store vs internet sales I owned a comic/baseball card shop pre Ebay/internet and often had to sell off larger ticket items to bigger dealers who have nationwide customer cases built by auctions/mail order No too often will you have people walk in cash in hand to buy FF 1's or Jordan 1984 Star bagged sets. I'd think now its even tougher since people can really shop back issues between Ebay and the many dealers who have web stores up I've been considering opening a new store of late just because I enjoy the hobby but I doubt I'd waste too much time and store space on back isses. Most stores I've seen either have zero back issues or a back issue section that is so off on pricing that no one bothers to look or they put out everything at $1 a pop and make money on bulk . As for collectibles losing value sure if you buy slabbed Moderns, Autographed limited edition made collectible [!@#%^&^], Pogs, beanie babies, etc etc Yes I agree you will lose cash. Will I lose on the Timely's, MLJ's, Catmans etc I collect? I rather doubt it, the trick is finding them for sale in the first place at a price that you wont be waiting years to turn a profit on. Those kinds of collectible once bought end up being held long term and when they resurface you can bet money in thebank it will be at a much higher price taking into consideration inflation and new collectors entering the hobby. I keep hearing people saying Gold and Silver will die out yet more and more younger collectors are showing up now armed with stupid bucks ready to get into collecting. When I go to a Con and Blazing Bobs booth surrounded by geriatrics in Larks socail security checks in hand ready to buy then I'll worry. I suppose I could go put my money into good companies run by honest guys like Dennis K at Tyco but I'd rather risk it on comics I love

in asia - many top stars do soft layouts in major magazines. penthouse hong kong for example, has seen a wide variety of famous asian actresses on their covers. these types of cover-appearances as well as the photobooks uniquely published for them, can command upwards of hundreds of dollars in asia - as well as here in north america where there also may exist a fan base (u just have to reach them, like through ebay).

i posted a link a few weeks back about an insane buy-it-now for a penthouse mag i own - i posted the price tag at $450. honestly - had i put it at $250, it's *very possible* someone would've bit. the item, in my mind, really wasn't up for sale at any price.

actually - as a collector of the individual on the cover (vivian hsu) - i can tell you there are some dedicated collectors of her stuff on ebay (myself being one of them). japan PH, HK PH, two photobooks, and her two R-rated movies are the 6 key items to collectors of her stuff (the HK PH - which i finally got about 5 weeks ago completed my "collection"). it's in areas like this, like getting a mint-copy of her HK PH (the holy grail) - that price really is no issue.

i don't really feel that way about comics - to me a comic has some inherent "value" assigned to it - so that i wouldn't feel like paying 10X its value just to acquire it. whereas for the HK PH, i was literally willing to pay through the roof for it (mint copy). luckily - the seller didn't know what he was selling - so i gave him a big sum (but way_below my minimum limit) so he was *very* happy, and i was also *very* happy.

the reason why i mention this is that for some here, they view certain comics as being (value-limitless) just as i do about the vivian hsu HK PH. as such - i definitely relate to people spending crazy $$$ on their grails, with no consideration of speculation/value etc. a grail is a grail. it's not to be sold. if one WERE to sell it and acquire money in exchange, the money would be used to try to acquire the same item. so in other words, the item wouldn't be sold at "any" cost...

(there needs to be a graemlin for twiddling my thumbs and trying to look innocent)

I have extensive collections of a wide variety of pornography, both foreign and domestic... and I used to think I might be a pervert until I started picking up some of the Japanese stuff and I realized that no Catholic School Survivor in North America need concern himself with that label...

I am also the proud part-owner of an extensive collection of Traci Lords on VHS, which are not stored in the United States, and no, I will not make copies for anyone. 893naughty-thumb.gif While I firmly believe that the regulations regarding her early work will change in my lifetime, I have no interest in spending that lifetime being traded for cigarettes... 893naughty-thumb.gif

A comics customer of mine in Texas has the kind of porno collection that could wind up as a museum exhibit fifty years from now. I'm one of the few people to see his 'cold room' and I still can't believe the number of tapes and reels he had. A conservative estimate would be around 2,000 linear feet of tapes, probably more, and enough film reels to choke a Hollywood studio. The story of pop culture collecting is one of collecting what no one else is and selling it back to them later. That gentleman could get virtually any price he wanted for his collection, especially the older material...

So yes... there are people out there collecting porno... smile.gif

Lastly, the thread with the most interest

Comics vs Porno, what's the upside?

Do you see what you've started?

How else are you gonna keep a thread going??? tongue.gif

There was a whole lot of disagreement about new book sales until I posted the figures and suddenly no one wanted to argue about them anymore... Reminds me of my high school days watching a group of guys argue about a girl's bra size while the guys who knew the truth kept nice and quiet.

BTW, current count of "Traci Lords" PM's I have received in the last hour: Six....

That scene wasn't bad although the director couldn't decide how high to turn up the smoke machines... One heck of an outfit though thumbsup2.gif

I'm partial to her work in Talk Dirty To Me 3.... cloud9.gif

I never get even ONE for my Wonder Woman porno tie. frown.gif It must be some form of discrimination! mad.gifgrin.gif

Yes, but the difference is people think you might actually hook them up with the porno tie...

I stated from the beginning I had no interest in being traded for cigarettes, so of course people are going to PM me saying "No... seriously... what do you want for them?"

So.... what do you want for your porno tie? tongue.gif

Facts are very often a problem around here... proof of facts is even worse. I like hearing the data though (and quite honestly, most people reading your posts probably do too) so keep it coming.

He's out of my jurisdiction so I can't touch him... but a call to one of my friends at the U.S. attorney's office down the street.... hmmmm.... (but he's not selling it, so... unless they qualified it as child pornography because of the age she was performing at, i don't think he should worry).

just kidding house smirk.gif... wouldn't be able to look over your great deals on trades anymore then.
