I've shared the background story of this book via PM with a few people and also publicly a few times on the boards. But I am thrilled to say that this sweet book is now back in my possession. Back in 1999, when my wife and I had moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia, and were in dire straits (couldn't find work), I proposed selling some of my ASM collection to my pops. The idea being we'd get some funds and he'd hold my comics. Included in the 40-issue ASM lot was my #1...which I originally bought 30 summers ago--in July 1981--at the Atlanta Comics and Fantasy Fair. I was a 14-year-old kid and I shelled out a mere 37.50 for it :whatthe: (from lawn mowing money, if I recall correctly) to the folks manning the Great Escape booth (Nashville, TN).

The fact I hadn't possessed it in 12 years was bothering me lately so I paid money down to get it back this summer and owe the ol' folks some time payments next month and also in October. So, the lesson is, kids, keep them keys close by. :cloud9:

I briefly had possession of it in 2005 when I shelled out around 75 bucks (if memory serves me well) to have it slabbed. Double what I paid for the book itself.

This book means more to me than my AF #15 and I strongly sense the book will be with me until I'm dispatched to the hereafter...

Thanks for listening/reading.

Amazing story! Glad you got her back!

I wish I had my original ASM 1 as well (but that's another story).

Glad it's back in your collection. :applause: My AMS1 is one of the last book that will leave my collection (hard earned paper route money).

Great story! My ASM #1 story is similar, I bought mine in 1988 with proceeds from my first real summer job (grunt work in a bank where my Mom worked). My brother, who was still enjoying being unemployed, called me from the comic shop one morning and told me that an ASM #1 had appeared on the wall and I should come in ASAP so it wouldn't get away. I proceeded to call the store just about every hour to check on it, and after my third call the guy working the counter (it was Moondog's store at the time, but I don't think he was there) asked if I would just like to have it held to save me the trouble of all the calls. I hadn't thought to ask that! I went in after work and the book was marked at $100, but anyone with a pull file got 10% off of anything. So I bought my #1 and picked up a VG #5 and a nice-looking #14 for good measure. I think my total purchase price that day was under $200 but honestly I only remember the price on the #1. I got it graded with my first coupon submission, and if I ever upgrade I'm still keeping this one.
