Love the placement on the date stamp there. I personally like having receiver dates on books. But it’s still nice when the dealer found a good spot for it.

It seemed odd to them, too, because they fixed it within a year or two of the 1961/1962 issues where all of the cover graphics were too crowded.  They just decreased the size of everything a bit including the price box, the Comics Code box, the comic title, tag lines like "THE WORLD'S GREATEST COMIC MAGAZINE!" etc.  Seemed like Stan or one of the artists wanted to jazz up the covers when they did the Marvel switch, and then they realized it was too crowded so they just kept refining the design template used for all of the titles.

Always loved that cover. Sure it’s a tiny bit cheesy. But I picture myself at age 10 seeing that on the rack (I’m far too young but I picture it anyway), could I pass on that book? Nope. Nope. No way. That one is going home.

But the 3 is absolutely scarcer in grade. One 9.8 never sold publicly. One 9.6 OWW sold twice in 2012 and 2014. This is just the third 9.4. None ever sold publicly. Five public sales of 9.2s (out of 11 on the census) from 2012-2015, none with white pages.

So there’s never been a white page #3 above 9.0 offered for sale. And hasn’t been a copy between 9.2-9.6 of any page quality offered publicly since 2015.

I don’t need to market the book. Heritage is doing just fine and that’s why I gave them these books. But the #3 is the one book I most strongly considered holding back because it’s the least likely to appear again.

Times have changed quickly. It’s no 9.4, but 2 years ago I bought this off Clink for slightly more than half Guide

The splash page on that is my favorite splash ever with Sandman reaching over and that giant hand. Curious when you got ahold of your FF1 9.2? Love to read a little more about that...probably never thought it would be worth such an astronomical sum of money when you opened it?

There’s more of the story in this thread (a ways down).

 

And while nothing else in the collection is going to top the 9.2 FF 1, there is a lot more to come. :)

Last month I got a call from a family friend saying a guy in his neighborhood had some "old" comics he bought as a kid and was wondering if I could look them over.  As it turned out, the guy was in his 70s and had a small stack of books he bought off the stands in the early 60s.  He worked at a golf course selling sodas as a kid and would buy comics with his money.  Although none of them were in high grade, he did have an FF1 and a low grade Avengers 1, which accounted for 98% of the value of the collection.  We agreed on a price and the books came back last night.
